When they reached the campsite they went straight to bed even though it was only 9. They were exhausted.
Joey didn't want to leave Pacey when he was injured, and made a deal with Dawson. After Pacey and Jen had gone to sleep, they'd switch so they could watch over their loved ones.
At 9:30, both Jen and Pacey were asleep so Dawson and Joey switched spots. Joey smiled at Pacey's easily breathing figure. She quietly moved Dawson's sleeping bag next to Pacey's and slid into it, watching Pacey before going to sleep.
"Jo?" Pacey's eyes opened to see Joey laying next to him. It was dead black outside, but Pacey could recognize Joey for anything.
Joey was asleep, a small smile on her face. Pacey smiled back, wondering what she was dreaming. She breathed peacefully, and looked so angelic that Pacey could figure why Dawson would like sleeping with her.
From Jen's tent came Madonna's "Crazy for You".
Pacey smiled down at Joey, thinking of how perfect she was. Then her eyes opened without the slightest trace of sleep. She'd been awake, hearing the song. Her eyes met his.
Pacey stood up, pulling her with him. She settled into his arms, and they danced.
"I love you Joey." Pacey told her softly, seriously.
"I love you Pacey." Joey whispered back. "More than anything."
"Anything." He echoed.
"I'm just glad to be home." Joey said to Jen. They were dangling their feet in the water, waiting for the guys to show up.
"Me too." Jen agreed.
"I think Pacey is, but he's too manly to admit it." Joey rolled her eyes. "His ankle hurts like hell."
Jen, always prepared with her stereo and CD's, pressed the play button. "Love of a lifetime" by Firehouse came out of the speakers.
I guess the time was right for us to say
We take our time and live our lives every day
by day
You make a wish You send it up a prayer
We know our dreams can all come
true.
'Cause you would never wonder
Will you be there for me?
I finally found the love, of the
lifetime
A love to last my whole life through...
I finally found the love, of a lifetime
Forever
in my heart, I finally found the love, of a lifetime.
Pacey slid in behind Joey, pulling her against him as the four sat quietly listening to the song. Joey smiled faintly as she leaned against Pacey. Jen was leaning against Dawson.
No one spoke as they listened, letting the words wash over them. It was true.
They had found the love of a life time in each other.
There was a feeling of disorientation as she struggled to remember where she was, and then she remembered.
Jen and Joey had had a sleep over in Jen's room, while Pacey and Dawson reveled in each other's company minus the girls for a night. It was fun, but today was going to be even better.
"Jen!" Joey reached over and shook her. "Wake yourself up!"
Jen groaned, then blinked her eyes groggily open. "What time is it?" She mumbled tiredly.
Joey glanced at the clock. "10:30."
"Elll..." Jen sighed and pushed herself up. "So?"
"So?"
"D'you want the shower first or should I take it?"
"I took one last night, before I came, so I'm good until tonight." Joey assured her. Jen nodded and rolled out of bed and to the bathroom. Joey closed the blinds to Jen's room and grabbed her bag, scrounging around for her clothes for that day.
Jen came back 20 minutes later, fully clothed and hair dry. Plus her makeup was done. Joey was still doing her hair.
"I could never get ready in 20 minutes." Joey told the blond girl enviously. "It always takes me forever."
"You just need to learn to do two things at once." Jen replied, sitting on her bed to wait for Joey. "It took me a while, but living in New York, where things move fast, is a quick way to learn."
Joey rewarded her with a killer smile and then turned back to her hair. She put down the brush and turned around. "How do I look?" She asked her friend, twirling around.
"Great." Jen said, grinning. Joey was wearing jean shorts and a dark blue halter top. "But I have something that'll add a little sparkle."
"What?"
Jen went over to her drawers and pulled out a tube. She handed it to Joey. "Glitter." Joey read. "Cool."
"Put it all over your stomach and your neck. Basically, where your body is showing bare that it doesn't normally do." Jen instructed. Joey hesitated, then complied. Soon every time she moved her body sparkled.
Jen started to put the tube away. "Nuh uh!" Joey stopped her. "You have to put it on too!"
Jen shrugged and put the glitter on around her upper chest, where her v-necked spheghetti strapped shirt dipped, and then her stomach, which showed every time she raised her arms.
"Ready?" Jen asked her.
Joey nodded, and the two girls ran over to Dawson's.
Joey slid into Dawson's room, then helped Jen in. They turned to face the boys.
"You know, I'm not sure I like my girlfriend hopping into guys' rooms that don't belong to me." Pacey commented, looking up at them from throwing on his shoes.
Joey grinned and sat next to him on the bed. Seconds later they were engaged in a deep kiss that left Jen feeling out of place, so she looked around for Dawson.
"He's fixing his hair." Pacey told Jen without looking away from Joey. His mouth met hers again.
"Oh." Jen uncomfortably made her way over to the bathroom, where Dawson was just stepping out.
"Hey!" Dawson said in surprise.
Jen smiled and kissed him lightly. "Your two best friends are playing tonsil hockey on your bed and I just didn't feel exactly comfortable."
"Oh. Them." Dawson rolled his eyes. "I swear, their relationship is purely sexual and is not going to last."
Jen arched an eyebrow. "That sounds like a curse." She commented.
"Just an observation." Dawson shrugged and quickly changed the subject. "So are we ready?"
"We are. I don't know if they can bear to tear themselves apart." Jen jerked her thumb in the direction of Dawson's room with a sly grin. They poked their heads into the room, where Pacey and Joey were arguing.
"Told you." Dawson said in Jen's ear. Jen's face flashed annoyance as they stood in the doorway.
"Are you guys ready to go to the carnival?" Jen asked, interrupting their argument.
Pacey and Joey looked up. "Yeah." Joey said, standing up. She threw a glare at Pacey and walked with Jen down the stairs, leaving Pacey with Dawson.
"What was that all about?" Dawson asked Pacey.
"Oh, she's mad 'cause I wanted to know how often she climbed through your window." Pacey snorted. "I didn't tell her not to, I didn't say anything remotely like that. I just wanted to know how often she did."
"Jo's kinda sensitive about that." Dawson told Pacey. Pacey rolled his eyes.
"You couldn't have told me that before?" He asked, going down the stairs. Dawson sighed and followed.
Jen and Joey were waiting while Dawson and Pacey went on a roller coaster. Joey wanted to go, but agreed to stay with Jen while the two boys reluctantly left. Pacey had flashed a devilish grin and kissed Joey long and hard before taking off with Dawson. She could still feel his lips on hers.
"Dawson seems to think that you and Pacey have only a purely-" Jen started to joke.
"Hey babes." The next second they were surrounded by a group of boys, all their age. The group consisted of 5 boys.
"Hello losers." Joey said back with mock politeness.
"Ooo... Feisty." The boy who had spoken sat next to Joey on the bench. She gave him a look of utter disgust and contempt. "You're a cutie."
"Am I really that bad looking Jen?" Joey asked her friend, bending forwards to speak.
"Nah, you're a babe." The boy in the middle grinned at her and moved closer.
"And you're in my space." Joey stood up. "Let's go Jen." She said. Jen stood up and they walked away.
"Joey? Jen? Why aren't you guys where we said we'd meet you?" Dawson asked as he and Pacey walked towards them. Their grins were already dying off their faces.
"Some guys took an instant liking to Joey so we scrammed." Jen told the two boys as Dawson put his arm around her shoulders.
"How much of a liking?" Pacey wanted to know, studying each girl. "They didn't... Try anything did they?"
"Define try." Joey snapped unhappily, crossing her arms.
"They hit on her." Jen told him. "And then they-"
"Tried again." Joey interrupted, looking up. Indeed, there were the 5 boys again, making their way towards them with grins.
"Hello babe." The one who had spoken before slung his arm around Joey's shoulder.
"Hello again loser." Joey pushed off his arm while Pacey grabbed her possessively and pushed her behind him so he was facing the creep.
"Ooo. And who is this? An over protective older brother? I promise dude, when I return your sister, her innocence will not have been taken unwillingly." The boy laughed. The next instant he was on the ground howling and covering his nose.
"You broke my nose!" The boy shrieked. His friends didn't know what to do. They looked ready to start following Pacey; make him their leader.
"I'll do worse if you ever look at her again." Pacey threatened. He looked at the other boys, disgust on his face. "Get your fallen leader out of here." They quickly obeyed him.
"Wow." Dawson arched an eyebrow. "Impressive."
"You okay?" Pacey ignored Dawson and turned to Joey.
"I'm fine, thanks." Joey studied him closely. "You broke his nose for me?"
"Um, no." Pacey mockingly tried to lie. "Um, he annoyed me."
Joey smiled and hugged him gently. "How's your hand?" She asked lightly.
Pacey glanced at it ruefully. "It's gonna be black and blue." He assured her.
"Poor baby." Joey brought his hand up to her lips and gently kissed it.
"And now it's suddenly painless." Pacey wrapped his arms around her. "I'd never let anyone hurt you Jo." He promised.
Jen and Dawson watched Joey's face on Pacey's shoulder change to a smile that showed all the love she felt for him.
Joey sighed and walked away from Pacey. "It's over." She said softly, then turned back to him. "It's over!"
"No! It's not over!" He grabbed her by the arm and held her in a hard grip. "It will never be over!"
"It's been over for months." Joey shook out of his grip. "You just never wanted to accept it!"
"Why are you doing this?" He demanded. "Why? What could I have possibly done except love you unconditionally? Is it...?" He broke off as she turned away. "It is isn't it? It's that Roy guy. Damn it!"
"Don't go getting all high and mighty! You've been seeing that Celia girl behind my back for 2 months!" He blanched. "What? You didn't think I'd find out about it? I'm not stupid!"
"I never said that you were!" He protested.
"I-" Joey broke off and looked over at Dawson and Jen. "Line." She called out.
Joey and Pacey burst out laughing and he swung her around in a hug and kissed her. Dawson looked up from behind the camera, annoyed.
"That's not in the script!" He complained.
"Deal with it!" Pacey shot back. "I can only fight with her for so long before I've got to give it up. I'm giving it up." Pacey kissed her again. "And right now I'm really thirsty so could you toss me a bottle of water Jen?"
Jen reached inside the cooler and tossed Pacey a bottle of water, which he caught one handed in the air above his head and proceeded to down. Jen tossed Joey one, and she also drank it.
They were on the island where Anderson took Joey, though no one knew that. They were filming Dawson's latest movie, and Joey and Pacey kept cracking up every time they had to fight. Jen had to do a scene with Pacey as Celia, and Joey had gotten absolutely livid. Dawson was actually afraid of what Pacey would do when Dawson filmed his scenes with Joey as Roy, which were next.
"We could do a different scene." Dawson offered the other couple, who paused from squirting water on each other to nod. They went back to their water fight, getting Jen in on it.
Inevitably the two girls ganged up on Pacey, and he ended up drenched. Dawson sighed. Guess he and Joey would have to do their scene.
Jen read Dawson's mind. "Why don't you do your scenes with Joey since Pacey's wet?" She suggested.
Dawson nodded, his heart beating rapidly. Basically Roy and Lisa, Joey's character, made out a lot. They spoke a bit.
"I'll work camera." Jen told Pacey, who was still laughing slightly. Joey shook herself to get out the giggles and then tossed Jen her water bottle.
"Uh... Let's do their first beach scene." Jen recommend, flipping through the script. Dawson and Joey glanced over it, both blanching.
"What?" Pacey asked, looking over Joey's shoulder. He blanched as well and swallowed hard. "Tough life bein' an actor." He tried to crack. Jen studied him closely and put a reassuring hand on his shoulder as Joey and Dawson stood on the beach.
"And... Action!" Jen called out. Joey and Dawson started running, Joey giggling.
"Let me go!" Joey shrieked flirtatiously as he grabbed her around the waist and held her possessively close.
"Not a chance." Dawson informed her lightly, then drew her even closer.
"Where did you learn brute force?" Joey asked, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"The movies. They're horrific for it." Dawson grinned and kissed her.
They fell back on the sand, still kissing. Jen glanced at Pacey for an instant. He looked like he was going to tear something apart, or call cut soon.
Finally Jen watched Dawson's hand slip slightly into Joey's shirt, calling for the 'cut'. Jen waited a few more seconds, then: "Cut!" She called.
Joey and Dawson quickly broke apart, both laughing hysterically. Pacey still looked pissed. Jen grabbed his arm to keep him from ripping Dawson limb from limb.
"That was like making out with my brother!" Joey giggled, shuddering. "Nothing personal Dawson."
"No problem. I felt the same way." Dawson and Joey started laughing again while Pacey sat down in the chair and crossed his arms moodily.
A few minutes later Joey was sliding onto Pacey's lap and looking down at him with mock pity. "Poor baby has to watch his girlfriend make out with another guy." She teased.
"Just wait till I have my scene with Jen and see how angry you get." Pacey snapped back.
"Pacey..." Joey grinned and gently kissed him. "Like I would give you up for someone else."
Pacey smiled slightly at that, then kissed her again quickly. Dawson was waiting patiently so Pacey and Jen could film their next scene.
It was in the water, so Pacey was okay being wet. Actually, they both had to be wet so they splashed around in the water a little.
"Okay. Pacey... Get lay down in the water right about here." Dawson pointed at an area where the tide was coming in and Pacey's ears were just starting to get wet in the water. "Jen, you're," He gulped. "On him." Jen giggled and both wet people laughed as she got on top of him.
Dawson nodded. "That's perfect. Now go out into the water and splash around again, and then come back here."
"Gotcha chief!" Pacey saluted him.
"And..." Dawson looked through the camera. "Action!"
Pacey chased Jen out into the water, and they splashed around a bit. Pacey fell on his back in the spot Dawson had directed, and Jen landed on him. They both laughed, and their faces grew serious. Jen lowered her mouth to his.
Joey looked ready to throw up. Or worse. All she knew was that the kiss was too deep.
"Cut." Dawson called. They didn't stop kissing. "Cut!" He called louder. They were still going at it. "CUT!" He shouted.
The two broke apart, looking up at their significant others. "Couldn't hear." Pacey pointed to his ear. "Got water in the ear."
Joey wasn't convinced, but Dawson was willing to believe it. He wanted to believe it. Joey felt like her heart was breaking in half. This was it, she knew it. She'd lost Pacey to Miss New York.
"We're through." Joey said softly, like it hurt her.
"What?!" Pacey exclaimed, shocked. He stared at her from a feet away.
"We're through." Joey said louder. "Over. Done. No longer dating."
"This isn't Dawson's script Jo! He's not hiding with a secret camera!" Pacey grabbed her arm. "Why are you doing this?"
Joey ripped her arm away from his grip and started to lie. She shut her mouth and answered him honestly. "Because I've never seen you kiss someone the way that you kissed Jen today, and I want you to be happy."
"Joey, I'm happy with you." Pacey told her, horrified.
"Pacey, I love you." She put a hand over her heart as she said that. "And part of loving someone means wanting them to be happy. And I saw your faces, even if you didn't. You're happy with her." She was calm on the outside. Inside she felt like she was making the worst mistake of her life. No, she knew she was making the worst mistake of her life. For her anyway.
Pacey shook his head. "You're not going to change your mind are you?" He asked, sounding dazed.
"No." Joey licked her lips.
"You're really dumping me because of Dawson's stupid movie kiss."
"No." Joey shook her head. "I'm breaking up with you because even if you don't know it, it's what you want." She paused. "Remember a long time ago Pacey, when I had this big thing for Dawson and you kept trying to get us together because you thought we belonged together, even though it hurt you?" She went on. "Well that's how I feel now. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there."
"There will never be anyone else for me but you Josephine." Pacey told her softly.
Joey choked back the tears. "I hope you don't forever think that's true. Just kiss me and leave." She whispered.
Pacey slowly brought her into his arms and held her lovingly for a few minutes before dropping his head to hers and kissing her with everything that was him.
Joey broke the kiss finally, and turned her back on him. She walked to her home, wiping away at the tears.
"I love you Josephine!" Pacey shouted at her retreating figure, not bothering to hide his tears.
She turned around and stared at him for a long while. "I love you Pacey." She said softly, then turned around again and walked ome.
"There is nothing between me and Pacey." Jen said as Joey opened the door.
Joey started laughing. "Hello to you too Jen." She grinned. "You wanna come in?"
"Only if you promise to listen."
"Jen, I saw his face. He's like Dawson was. Not knowing that they loved someone." Joey shrugged. "I'm not mad. You'd think I'd be mad but I'm not."
"Joey, please listen. I don't feel that way towards Pacey." Jen tried again.
"Kiss him." Joey instructed.
"What?" Jen looked horrified.
"Kiss him. Not as Celia but as Jen. Just Jen and Pacey. Then you'll realize how you feel." Joey smiled slightly. "I'm not mad. You can't control who you fall in love with."
"Joey... I'm still dating Dawson."
"Dawson will understand." Joey assured her. "Go to Pacey. Trust me."
Jen shook her head. "I can't do that Joey. For several reasons-"
"Just do it Jen!" Joey ordered. "You'll thank me on your wedding day."
"If I do it, and there's nothing there will you get back with Pacey?"
"I can't." Joey told her softly.
"Why?!"
"Because as much as I'm not mad, I'm still hurt." Joey tried to shrug of her embarrassment.
"Jo-"
"Jen." Joey interrupted. "Go." She pointed to the door. "I tell you, you'll thank me."
Pacey opened his front door and would have gasped if the person hadn't pressed their mouth against his. The kiss was deep and intense.
"No fireworks." Jen mused as she pulled away.
"No sparklers." Pacey agreed.
"Underground lust." Jen commented.
"Definitely. But not something that you would put much past hormones." Pacey continued.
"No way." Jen leaned against the doorframe. "So now we can tell her."
"Joey?" Pacey looked surprised.
"None other than." Jen grabbed his hand. "Let's go."
Joey wasn't at her house, so Jen and Pacey went to Dawson's.
There was giggling coming from under the covers, and Joey's shrieks. Two pairs of feet were sticking out from under the covers, and they moved over to the side. Pacey and Jen watched with horrified eyes.
Pacey stalked forward and ripped off the cover just as Joey triumphantly held up a plastic red ring. She and Dawson stared at the other two in shock.
"Please tell me this isn't what it looks like." Jen pleaded, sitting down on Dawson's chest under the window.
"What isn't what what looks like?" Joey asked, confused. She and Dawson exchanged a puzzled look, then burst out laughing. "No no no no no!" Joey giggled. "We were fighting over the toy ring and it slipped under the covers." Joey giggled again. "I told you, we're like brother and sister."
Jen sighed in relief. "We tested your little theory Joey, and-"
"You know what? I'm happy for you guys." Joey interrupted. She tossed the ring to Pacey. "Claim her." She told him, then bolted out Dawson's door.
"Joey!" Pacey went after her immediately, but Dawson stopped him.
"What did she mean 'claim her'?" Dawson demanded.
"Joey has it stuck in her head that Pacey and I have a hidden passion for each other and insisted that we kiss. And we did, and we decided that there was nothing except normal teenage hormones." Jen answered.
Dawson relaxed. "Well..."
"Can I go after Joey now?" Pacey asked impatiently.
"I wouldn't." Dawson told his friend.
"Why?"
"Because she came over this afternoon crying." Dawson replied. Pacey looked near tears himself.
"I don't know what to do about her." Pacey sighed, shaking his head. "I can't help her. I can't do anything. She won't listen to me when I try to tell her she's wrong."
"Joey's stubborn." Dawson shrugged. "And her mind's set... So I suggest that you find someone else."
"No." Pacey crossed his arms.
"Don't be surprised if she does Pace." Dawson said quietly.
Pacey looked like he was going to be sick.
"Hi!" The boy stuck out his hand. "I'm Jason."
"Dawson." Dawson took the boys hand and arched an eyebrow at Joey, who's arm was through Jason's. She was looking up affectionately at Jason.
"Jason and I are going to the movies tonight." Joey told Dawson. "Why don't you come?"
"Can Jen?"
"Sure." Joey shrugged. "But I thought that she and Pacey..."
"You left before they had a chance to explain." Dawson informed her.
"We'll see you tonight at 7 okay?" Joey continued.
"Sure Jo." Dawson nodded and watched as they walked away.
"I mean, you prepared me for her to get together with some other guy, but I didn't think it would be so fast!" Pacey snapped as he paced around Dawson's room. Jen and Dawson were getting sea sick watching him.
"It's been a week Pacey." Jen tried.
"That's all! A week!" Pacey laughed bitterly. "I guess I wasn't irreplaceable."
"Pacey..." Dawson tried as well.
"Forget it." He shook his head. "You know, my uncle Jack called last night. He offered me a place to stay for the rest of the summer, and maybe past that 'cause he heard things were going bad at my house. I think I'll take him up on it." He stalked out of Dawson's room while they tried to call him back.
"Pacey, please. Rethink this." Dawson begged as he and Jen watched with horrified eyes as he packed.
"No." Pacey snapped.
"Pacey, leaving because of Joey isn't the answer!" Jen protested.
"What is?" Pacey demanded. At her lack of answer he went back to packing.
Dawson's face flashed angrily, then he ran out of Pacey's house. Jen and Pacey exchanged a look, and again Pacey went back to packing.
"Dawson let me go!" Joey shrieked. "Let me go!" He had her by the shirt collar, and now he locked her arm behind her back painfully and pushed her forwards. Her eyes were covered with a blind fold. "Dawson Leery you're hurting me!"
"Joey, you are my best friend in the whole world but sometimes you make big mistakes that everyone pays for!"
"What are you talking about Dawson?" Joey demanded, trying to pull away.
"Jason!"
"Jason? Bodie's cousin? Why would...?" Joey laughed. "I'm not dating Jason! I've known him for years. Now will you let me go?"
"No!" Dawson had been shocked to hear that Jason was Bodie's cousin, but he pushed her forwards.
"Dawson!" Joey shrieked again. They were at Pacey's house now, and Pacey was coming out the door with suitcases. He hadn't noticed the two.
Dawson whipped off the blind fold and Joey turned around and punched him in the stomach. "Don't do that again!" She ordered. He forcefully turned her around.
Joey looked in confusion at the sight. "So Pacey's going on a vacation. Why should that concern me?"
"Because he's leaving!"
"What?" Joey blanched and stared at Dawson.
"He's going Jo, because he doesn't think that anyone here loves him."
"I thought that he and Jen-"
"You keep saying that and we keep telling you no!"
Pacey and Jen looked over at Dawson's loud voice. They stopped as they saw Joey. Joey was crying, her small form shaking as she sank to the ground in a fit of sobs.
"Damn it Dawson! What the hell did you say to her?" Pacey demanded, striding forward quickly to wrap his arms around Joey.
"I made her realize that sometimes you get hurt in love." Dawson told him harshly. "That's what this was about wasn't it Jo? You and Pacey got too close and you got scared."
Joey shook her head miserably.
"It is! Don't lie Jo! Jen was just a cover that you could hide behind to veil your real feelings!"
Again Joey shook her head, but the sobs wouldn't let her speak.
"Admit it Joey!" Dawson shouted at her.
"Enough man!" Pacey shouted angrily at him, but Dawson was beyond hearing.
"Joey!" Dawson barked.
"Dawson!" Pacey barked back. Dawson's eyes unglazed and snapped to Pacey. "Back off."
"She can't admit it, even as she's terrified of losing you." Dawson snarled. "You're going to lose him if you don't admit it Jo."
"Dawson!" Jen shouted, horrified.
"He's going to leave you here alone Jo. And isn't that worse than being scared he's going to leave you?" Dawson knelt down beside her and forced her eyes up to meet his. "He's right here Jo. He's not going to leave you. He loves you too much. But you've got to admit it."
"That was part of it." Joey whispered. "But I thought there was something. I swear I did. And I didn't want him to be bound to me because he felt obligated."
Pacey's eyes filled with tears.
"He's not your dad Jo." Dawson whispered softly.
Joey's sobs were heart wrenching.
"How did you know exactly what to say to her?" Jen asked, enthralled.
"It's called tough love." Dawson answered. "I still feel horrible about it though."
"Well you did great. She's back together with Pacey and I've never seen her happier. Nor Pacey for that matter."
Dawson and Jen watched as the two they talked about ran around the beach and occasionally splashed water at each other.
"They're great together." Dawson agreed.
"Great? They're destined." Jen laughed. Dawson nodded, smiling as well.Pacey ran forwards and scooped Joey up, swinging her around a few times as she laughed, and then setting her down and kissing her.
"A purely sexual relationship." Dawson mused.
"How can you say that after what you said to her?" Jen couldn't believe her ears.
"I told her what she wanted to hear Jen. Most of it was the truth. But sometimes I wonder." Dawson trailed off and closed his eyes.
Jen watched her boyfriend for a minute, then shook her head.
