Although it is unlikely that Mormon chapels were consciously designed like this (though you never know) the symbolism is nevertheless very potent: the LDS spire poking out of the ground represents the spire of a true church buried and hiden away beneath the ground to which Mormons have no access. What lies on top is a COUNTERFEIT. The spire in Christendom represents a conduit to heaven and was traditionally placed above the altar where the Lord's Supper was celebrated. It was used also to identify the location of a Christian Church so that it could easily be spotted amongst other buildings in a town or city. It was thus a kind of beacon or landmark for pilgrims. The LDS Church uses the same Christian landmark but instead of leading worshippers to a Christian Church takes them, instead, to a counterfeit.
