FINDING THE "KEY THEME" IN OR FOR A POETIC WORK

Deane P. Goodwin
--  I find myself first possessed, obsessed, with a particular thought or idea. In the case of The Dance, I had the idea of strangers meeting, each with their own agenda, and each concerned with their own wants and needs. I find this a common enough behavior in society to warrant a comment. From the concept of the two strangers, I found the common elements of Expectations and Desires, two similar behaviors, which do have their differences. The idea of the ego needs of the two being hidden yet paramount, created the Masquerade. Naturally, the need to interact was present or there would have been nothing to write in the first place. Thoughts of an older, traditional masquerade ball gave rise to the idea of the waltz, and the "Key Theme" had been created. Now we had only to let the dance begin and see where the music stopped.
