~ Cats ~

Cats are fabulous little animals. When they are kittens they are amazingly gentle and playful. When they are full-grown, they still have their kitten qualities but they are more sedate and wiser. They make for interesting pets and even though there are critics who say that cats are useless (they must be dog owners), they do have their place in a lot of families and are adored the world over.

Just recently I had a very young kitten fall asleep on the hood of my car. I was visiting with some friends on a very warm summer evening and was about to leave to go home. To my surprise, as I looked at my car, I discovered this ball of fur nestled right up against the front windshield. This beautiful little kitten was sprawled out (on all fours) and fast asleep. I approached the car very quietly and it didn't move. This kitten must have been dead to the world. I leaned over the fender and gently touched it with my finger. I was afraid I was going to startle it but I had no choice but to wake it up. I was tired and looking forward to going back home. The moment I touched the kitten, it let out a little cry and then stared at me (in disgust). The kitten looked at me for only a second and then proceeded to fall back asleep. I was shocked. I stroked the kitten with my finger a few times and it finally, reluctantly, woke up. The kitten got up and stretched and then looked at me (thinking okay now what, you woke me up). I picked up the kitten with my one hand and started petting him very gently with my finger. The purr was almost instantaneous. I could feel the little heart pounding through my hand and this kitten was so delighted to be getting some attention. It was really quite cuddly. The coloration on this kitten was really striking. It was a long hair orange and white tabby (with just a small ribbon of grey and black). I remember the fur being so soft and fine almost like silk. There was this uncanny remote resemblance to a Bengal tiger. I must admit it was very unique and very beautiful. I had never seen this colour combination before. I am sure the owners had specially picked this one out.

So here I am holding this kitten not knowing what to do with him. I have woken him up and it is obviously getting some much-wanted attention and enjoyment out of being with me, but at this point I had no idea who he belonged to and I didn't feel comfortable leaving him all alone. I asked the neighbours (who happened to be outside) if it was their kitten. Sure enough, they were looking for him and were wondering where he had gone off to. I told them the story and returned the kitten to the young girl standing in the driveway next door. I was sad. I actually got attached to this kitten in a matter of five minutes flat. I don't know what it is about these little creatures, but they are very adorable and instantly addictive. No wonder a lot of people love kittens. Why do you think pet stores put them in the front window?

Eventually kittens grow into cats (like the one I just mentioned). A lot of the novelty has worn off by now and you have to do deal with a couch pillow that eats. Cats seem to develop this "attitude" as they get older. I don't know if it is their "feline" genetic heritage (like their bigger distant cousins) or whether it is the effects of domestication. They certainly seem to have their owners wrapped around their little paws (I mean claws). I know some people who spend more time and money on their cats than they do on other members of their family. Some of these cats are included in their owner's wills. Do you think any of these cats actually "worked" for this honour ? Not likely. They are real good at being the perfect pet. They know when to be gentle and loving and they know how to push every wrong button if you happen to get them mad. To make things worse, they don't really care either way...

playtime

Cats seem to "know" everything. Have you ever watched a cat walk around a house ? I think they believe that their owner's house is really their own private kingdom and the "owner" is just an inconvenient nuisance who they have to coerce into feeding them every once in awhile (but only when they want to be fed, of course). They are very arrogant and somehow don't care if you agree with them or not. I think this is what makes them so unique as pets. People love to pamper them and love to watch them do all this "royalty" stuff. It is sometimes quite funny and so typical of cats. They have a mind of their own, that's for sure.

I have had the "privilege" of being the owner of three cats so far in my life and all of them did reluctantly put up with me for the time they were with me. They were all very friendly and attentive but I was only their buddy when it was convenient for them. I do miss them from time to time, but I haven't the time nor the energy to truly do a pet justice. The timing just isn't right for me right now to have a pet.

Cats may be independent by nature but they do need attention. They thrive on human interaction even though it may be only when they want it. They do whine and hiss a lot (especially when you wake them) but eventually they come around and will be licking your finger or sleeping peacefully on your lap, if you treat them nicely and attentively. I actually like to terrorize cats every once in awhile because some of them are so darn lazy. They need that "wake-up call" to snap them out of it. It isn't meant to hurt them, it is meant to make them act like a kitten again. They do like to play, even when they are old and more mature. If you treat a cat well and make it work from its instincts every once in awhile,it will be a wonderful pet for a very long time.

Pure and simple....
