~ Drinking Coffee ~
I love coffee. My significant other loves coffee as well. Most of my friends and family drink coffee. We help keep many a donut franchise and gourmet coffee shop in business because we love our coffee so much. It is a romantic, soothing drink which has not been given enough credit. I am even bold enough to say that I think it can be an aphrodisiac. It is warm, full-bodied, soothing and stimulating, all at the same time. Unlike hot chocolate or tea, coffee is a distinctive class of beverage that is really on its own. There is no substitute.
It is the elixir that starts and holds conversations. How many times have you heard people say "Let's meet for a coffee". It is the universal beverage of the world (along with tea I suppose). There are more varieties of coffee than there are fruit juices. At one store alone, I counted fifty different blends. Each one has its own distinct taste and aroma. It is really a thing for true coffee lovers. I imagine that coffee has different value to different cultures around the world. It certainly is a big part of my daily routine and I wouldn't give it up for anything (well, maybe decaf). I am actually drinking a coffee right now, while I am writing.
So why coffee ? I suppose there is something very traditional, elegant and distinguished about coffee. It conjures up visions of fame, fortune, travel and prestige. It is an "old world" beverage that has been enjoyed for hundreds of years and it still hasn't lost its old-world charm. There are so many styles now as well, like expresso, cafe latte and cappuccino (just to name a few). Think of all the gourmet coffee shops and cafes that are around.
Meeting for coffee is actually a really good way to catch-up on the latest news from your friends and that significant other. It is one of the easiest ways to meet a blind-date or a new love prospect. It is that lure of a satisfying hot drink and a break in the day. I look forward to having a cup of coffee when I am meeting with someone at a nearby cafe or restaurant. It can end up being a wonderful "date" that all started very innocently and casually. I wonder just how many true romances have started and blossomed from a lengthy conversation over a cup of coffee.
Coffee is the best thing to have after a wonderful sit-down meal. I have had countless dinners (thousands) that have ended with a wonderful cup of coffee and no dessert. That cup of coffee seems to bring completion to the evening. It ends the eating and helps kick-start the conversation. I truly believe it helps settle the food in your stomach. It also helps postpone the bill from coming or doing all those dirty dishes afterwards.
I wake up most mornings to smell that wonderful aroma of coffee in the kitchen. It makes you smile that the day has begun and you have something delicious waiting for you, when you get up. It soothes the soul. It is really a wonderful, caring gesture for someone to hand you a hot cup of coffee, any time. It is a very special treat to have a cup in bed, first thing in the morning, while you're still trying to shake-off a good snooze. (especially on a Sunday morning). Try it sometime. It is one of life's little treats that you can give and receive. You will receive major brownie points for this random act of kindness.
Next time you have a hot cup of coffee, wrap your hands around the mug (after it cools down a little). The warmth through your hands is invigorating and soothing. It feels quite nice, even in the dead of summer. Nobody likes being touched with cold hands. You might as well warm them up if you are about to touch someone, especially if it is your significant other. Drinking coffee with your lover actually makes kissing much more enjoyable as well. Your lips are warm and moistened and you both have been drinking the same thing, so your mouths taste the same. You'll want to kiss longer and with more passion. It is so true I can taste it. Coffee is such a wonderful, innocent aphrodisiac.
Not everyone can handle "full-blown" perked coffee; the caffeine can give you one heck of a buzz. If you think you may have a problem with caffeine, try the decaffeinated blends. They taste just as good as the other blends. You cannot tell the difference when they are brewed correctly. You may be pleasantly surprised.
The one rule of thumb I always follow is "never let coffee sit". It doesn't have quite the same effect when it is cold and it does taste awful if there is a hint of burning or over-brewing. Turn off the coffee-maker as soon as it is brewed. Transfer the coffee to a thermos or a heated carafe, to save the aroma longer. It is definitely a good investment, even if you only use it once a day.
So, all of this out of a simple cup of coffee ? Yes. Don't ever under-estimate the happiness that comes from just a single cup.
Pure and simple...
