The mountain bike first raced into the biking world in 1970. Developed in California, it was designed to give the cyclist a new "off-the-road" freedom. It now outsells any other form of bike. The first mountain bike was named "clunkers" because of the sound made by the hub gears.

    CLUNKERS had:

      • wide tyres to absorb shock
      • heavy rims to take abuse
      • motor-cycle brake cables
      • Deraileur gears (extra low for steep hills)
      • a very stable frame shape.

MOUNTAIN BIKES: These were developed by Gary Fisher & Charlie Kelly in Carlifornia. The name Mountain Bikes was first used at the 1981 New York Bike Show. They have full suspension in the front and rear and give a smooth ride.

The appeal of Mountain Bikes are their strength, low gearing and user friendliness.

The environmentally friendly image of the bike is being threatened, however, because the off-the-road capability of the mountain bike is causing land erosion in some terrain.

Mountain biking too has its safety features which inlcudes helmets and proper attire. Proper food consumption is also crucial.

Latest features include solid carbon frames to give high aerodynamics; aerodynamics spoke covers on wheels to reduce drag and handlebars that give better air-resistance.

This is our contribution on the technology of the mountain bike.
