Chocolate Cake

How many times have you heard that age-old command ‘eat your vegetables’ uttered around the dinner table? It was said to me as a child, and now as an adult, I inflict those very words on the younger members of our household. It’s good advice. But it doesn’t stop at those vegetables. We’ve also been told by those who should know that we should be say, eating multigrain bread and be getting our daily supply of calcium.

But that’s this week. It seems to me as if the dieting rules are always changing. One year this is bad for us, while the next year it’s good for us and something else is considered to be unhealthy. Take for instance, chocolate. Scientists now tell us, after all these years that dark chocolate can actually be good for us. They have found that dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and can actually help protect us against heart disease. Chocolate as a health food? It makes me wonder what else we’ve been told to eat in moderation when it is, in fact good for us? Imagine the freedom in this: your doctor giving you a prescription for dark chocolate! Could life get any better than that?

Okay, maybe not. But it’s an interesting thought to play with. Freedom is a mark of the Christian faith. We are free to enjoy anything that comes from God. However, the bible commands us not abuse this freedom. We must be careful and ensure that that which God has allowed you to enjoy doesn’t grow into a bad habit that destroys you. You make the choice. By the way, word has it that President Clinton put broccoli back on the White House menu when he was elected President.
