Wolves are carnivores, or meat-eaters. There are two types of carnivore, cat-like forms and dog-like forms. The dog-like group is divided into four families, one of which is the canid or dog family and includes the wolves. This family is further broken down into ten genera (plural genus) and 35 species. There are two wolf species. Order Carnivora (carnivores) Superfamily Canoidea (dog-like forms) Family Canidae (dogs) Grey Wolf Genus Canis Species lupis Red Wolf Genus Canis Species rufus

To me, wolves are perhaps the most charismatic animals in the world. Despite reputed to be fearsome animals with a penchant for human flesh -- which is completely untrue! -- they possess this charming and at the same time enigmatic quality. When they look at you through their dark soulful eyes, you sometimes feel as though you are looking back upon a creature as intelligent as yourself. Wolves are social animals, just like humans, living together in cohesive family groups dominated by an alpha male and female. The young pups are particularly friendly -- they would play with their elders with much irreverance, the adults indulging in the playful antics of the young. As the young pups mature, they join in the pack's activities, such as howling and some hunting, gradually developing the skills essentiel to the adult. The natural hierarchy that develops in a pack of wolves is no different from that of the human world -- the lower ranked wolves taking the roles of serfs and nursemaids for the young whilst the higher ranked lord over the entire scene.
