Arch Duchess
Damelia St. Karlon

Paladin of Athena (9th level)

Description:

Sex: Female
Race: Human
Hair: Extremely long golden with red highlights (thick and wavy)
Eyes: Fire Opal
Age: 38 (but soon to be younger if all goes well)
Height: 5’ 11”
Weight: 193 lbs

At 5’ 11” and 193 lbs Damelia looks like an Amazon, which is appropriate since she is a worshipper of Athena. Being a Paladin, her body is in extremely good shape and full of muscles. She is well known for her strength and prowess as a warrior. However, this does not detract from her femininity, which she carries proudly. When one looks at her they think of a sleek, powerful cat. She has aged well and appears to be in her late twenties early thirties, although in reality she is approaching 40. Damelia has incredibly beautiful hair. When not braided or put into a courtly coiffeur (as often her duty commands) her hair flows down her back to her tailbone. It is the color of the golden sun with reddish fire streaks through and is thick with beautiful waves. Her eyes are very unusual and are oft times commented upon. They are the color of fire opals, ice blue with changing flecks of red, green and white run throughout. She has pale skin, high cheekbones, and sensual blood red lips, all set in a very beautiful oval face.

When in battle Damelia proudly wears her magical golden plate mail armor. On her head is a helm that is in the shape of an owl’s head with wings spread toward the back. She carries a large shield with her personal arms upon it (a Hematite Pegasus destroying a hippogriffin – which represents her destroying her brother). Her shift is made of silk and is ice blue, with trim of green, red and white, to match her eyes. Her breeches are made of fine doe skin (soft tan) and she wears dark blue boots. Often Damelia dresses very regally in the court styles of Furyondy. She enjoys wearing beautiful dresses whenever possible. On her finger is an impressive ring, one she never removes. It is two opal hearts one incased in fire, other incased in ice. This ring designates the wearer as a member of the royal family of Furyondy. In the same hand as that which sports her royal ring is her prized battle-axe. It is golden with intricate scrollwork carved into the blades and the handle is finely detailed. This axes is an incredible work of art, but there is no doubt of its power as a weapon. When held by Damelia, it gives off a glow that surrounds not only the axe, but Damelia’s arm as well.

Role-Playing:
Damelia has a very strong sense of duty. Growing up as an heir to the kingdom of Furyondy, it was strongly instilled in her from birth. She believes in justice and protecting her people, even if it means giving up dreams, love and life itself. Her life belongs to the people of Furyondy. Damelia posses a strong will and a calmness of mind and body. She is determined to keep Furyondy safe. Her grandfather often told her, “the king (or queen) is tied to the land and his people are tied to the land. Therefore the king is tied to the people. What a good king needs is fairness, calmness and goodness”. She believes strongly in what her grandfather said.

Damelia will do anything for the people of Furyondy. She wishes only the best for them and loves them dearly. As such, she truly believes that to be a good ruler, one needs empathy and the ability to be a balanced and fair judge. Her motto is “It is better to be love than feared.” However, like her good friend, Moorak Drake, she knows that fear and intimidation can be very useful and uses them when necessary. Those who see her, and are not intimate friends, think of her as regal, distant and unapproachable, however their estimation of her would be a bit off. While it is true that due to her station in life she has often times kept herself at arms length to those she does not know, she is a very friendly person. Damelia wishes more people could see her private self and truly understand her, but realizes that this is unrealistic. She is nobility, a hero, and as such must keep her private and public life separate.

Damelia views people as Moorak does, according to their level of power and ability to defend themselves. She admires Moorak. Her favorite quote of his is “With great power comes even greater responsibility.”

Damelia considers being a "Protector" of Furyondy the greatest honor. Yet it is commonly known that she will do what is right and necessary to protect those who need her protection, whether from Furyondy or not. She will always fight the Good cause. As a Paladin, and champion of Good, it is her duty not only to protect those who are good, but also destroy evil whenever possible. She strongly believes that evil must be dealt with swiftly and without fear for ones life. She has never shirked from this responsibility.

Although Damelia is a stanch Paladin, she refuses to be a stupid one. If possible, she observes or uses diplomacy in a situation before choosing battle. “When one takes the time to observe, or attempt to determine the intent of others, it can often times make the difference between life and death; not just your own but innocent people as well.” She says with a smile. “Be lenient with your judgment until you know the facts, if at all possible. It is better to read the book before deciding it unworthy. Few things are as they appear.” She sobers here and adds “However, I would add that those who are evil and powerful do not have the ability or wiliness to change their ways. They frequently attack and kill without rhyme or reason and should be destroyed. I would suggest always knowing the orientation (i.e.: alignment) of those you deal with, friends and foes alike.” Damelia understands that without evil people would not know good, but that doesn’t mean that she will stand by and let evil invade her world!

Goals:
It is Damelia’s hope that the world Oerth will remember her as a fair, loving ruler who gave everything she could to make her country better. Her main goal is to restore Furyondy to its former “greatness”. This means helping the people of Furyondy rebuild their country after the devastation of the Rebellion, Illithid Wars, and attacks of the Horned Society. It also means having her people no longer fear for their lives. She never wants to look into the eyes of her countrymen’s children and see the deep pool of fear she has seen in them in recent years. It is time Furyondy knew happiness again. Her next goal is to have the worship of Athena be a well spread and accepted faith in Furyondy, along side of Angellus. It is her hopes and dreams to see Athena loved by Furyondy as much as she loves Athena.

Damelia desires a family. She would love to have children, not only to carry on the line, but also because she feels children bring joy. While she would prefer to marry for love, duty requires her to marry within her station. This has limited her choices greatly. So she has decided to find a husband who will help her do her duty. It is not necessary for her to be “in love” with him, however she must respect him and be friends with him. Even though her choices are limited, she will not marry someone she cannot respect or like.

Background:
Damelia knew it was her destiny to follow her paternal grandfather King Brockhearst St. Karlon's example. King Brockhearst was a Paladin of renown. He championed the cause of good headless of all risks (even the risk of his kingdom losing it’s king). It was in this pursuit that he chose to enter the great Abyss nearly 30 years ago, never to be seen again. Damelia grew up on tales of how wonderful a warrior he was, as well as stories of King Arthur and his knights. Because of them, she knew that it was her calling and so she began training to be a Paladin at a young age. Little did Damelia realize that one day she would have to confront her own brother.

Over 17 years ago a great sadness fell on Furyondy. King Colon passed away and left the kingdom to his son Cedric. While the death of the king was sad, the greater sadness what that the new king was not worthy to be king of the Lawful Good kingdom of Furyondy. He was a Chaotic Evil thief who gained the throne through murder (he hid his nature from the people). He did great damage to the land and ignored the people in their hour of need. He had the gall to claim that Princess Damelia, the heir to Cedric, had abandoned her people and turn from Good.

Damelia was forced to flee Furyondy or face death. Before she left Furyondy she let her brother know that she would avenger her father and reclaim Furyondy for the cause of Good by killing Cedric. This terrified the new king, whose power was yet to solidify, so he sent assassins out after the princess.

Thus began the princess’ adventuring. She was determined to prove to the people of Furyondy that she was a true Paladin ready to serve them always. Her first adventure included people she knew nothing about (however they would eventually become her oldest and dearest friends) : Bart Silverwind, Anastasia Woodswift, Rhom StrongArm and Todar GiantSlayer (no relation to Kelric). Mythros the Mad, a powerful, dragon-riding wizard kidnapped the princess Vialla. Damelia and her friends snuck into the wizard’s castle to save her. Although they were rather inexperienced, they were able to rescue her without alerting the mage and even slew an anti-paladin who was in service to Mythros.

At this time, Damelia felt it safer not to let those around her know of her royalty (she was unsure who she could trust). Unfortunately, her secret did not keep long. While camping in a forest on their way to another adventure, Damelia became frantic. She started screaming that the assassins found her. She believed she saw them in the forest. The group went on guard and scouted the area but found nothing. Other members of the party also began have unusual hallucinations. At mornings light all the madness evaporated. The party dubbed this forest the forest of madness. However, Damelia’s new friends were quite curious as to why assassins where after her and insisted that she explain herself. Although hesitant, she finally explained all, because she realized her new friends lives would be at stake if they chose to remain in her company. It was from then on that Damelia chose not to keep her identity a secret. She felt that if the assassins were good, they would find her no matter what. With the help of her friends they would be ready for the attack.

After many adventures, one of which brought “fame” to the party in the small town of Velumth and another in which they became the “Opal Ring Wearers”, the attack that Damelia anticipated occurred. While sitting to dine with her friends, Damelia was poisoned by an assassin. Luckily Anastasia’s healing saved the princess. The others chased down the culprit, but not without some difficulties. Alderan, a lion crat, was shot in the eye with an arrow as he peeked over a high wall the assassin. Damelia was left quite weak from the poisons effect, but she would regain her strength with rest. This assassin, it was discovered was well trained, but luck was with the princess.

Damelia joined Bart, along with Glorin Brightbow, Alderan and Carnellia in a series of adventures that ended with the party on a jungle island ruled by a sea hag/witch. Luckily the party had a witch of their own, for Rhanee StrongArm had been sent by her god Bahamut to aid them. The adventures were now forced on a quest to defeat the hag, in order to do this they must recover the lost sword Sea Flame. While searching for Sea Flame they found rings of breathe water/free action, they also recovered Sea Flame’s twin sword Ocean Frost as well as Damelia’s Lawful Good battle Axe. At this point the adventure was named “Quest for Fire and Ice” and Damelia felt it an omen since her royal ring represented fire and ice.

After recovering Sea Flame and killing the hag, the adventures were left in the hag’s room facing a magic mirror. Damelia, missing her good friend (and secret love, although he never knew), she looked into the mirror and asked to see Glorin. When he appeared Damelia, without thinking of the consequences for once (damn love), went through the mirror. All her friends, fearing for her life, followed. Something went wrong and the party was separated. Rhanee and Bart returned home, while Glorin ended up with Damelia, Raconna and Carnellia in the Artic. Those who went through the mirror from the hags’ room lost all their possession bar one. They ended up in the Artic naked, holding only the item they chose to retain. Damelia kept her new battle-axe. One odd boon they received was that their opal rings and the water breathing rings fused into one (Damelia’s also included her Royal Ring).

It was while returning from the Artic that Damelia befriended Horath, a white artic dragon. Damelia determining the dragon was not evil (even though typical white dragons were), negotiated with her to gain passage back to warmer climes. Carnellia, their mage, agreed to teach Horath magic in exchange for the ride. This was a perfect example of how Damelia prefers observation to slaughter. Here she avoided bloodshed and, furthermore, achieved a way back home for the party. Horath kept her promise and escorted the party to the Valley of Spirits. They succeeded in going through the valley, in which they gain new party members (Gamoth, Amajaro and Slee), and found the “Stairs to the Gods”. During the climb to the top, Damelia saw a beautiful Pegasus. She had been waiting for the right moment to call her warhorse (she was now 6th level), and now she knew was the time. The Pegasus came to her and telepathically said “Not yet, but soon”. When the party finished their climb they found a beautiful garden full of cats: small domestic ones and wild and large preying ones. In the center was the Goddess of Cats, Bast. Carnellia, the mage, was in awe since she was also a priestess of Bast. Bast gave each member a boon. Damelia asked for the Pegasus as a warhorse, received it, and was transported back to her home.

When back home, Damelia decided it was time to help Furyondy. She discovered that while she was away her homeland had deteriorated even more. She was now powerful enough to get a small army together, as well as numerous powerful friends and destroy her bother. With the help of her old mentor, Sir Exvyn de Lyonnain (a paladin of Angellus), she gathered together a force that included many associates, past and present. This band touched off the rebellion. This was a tough war, and many of the nobles of Furyondy did not know which side to chose and therefore stayed “neutral” or chose the king because of his power.

Just as Damelia’s group was gaining victories, she was kidnapped by powerful psionist Adnar and Tyris Flare. These two, working for Adam Malachitous, had a premonition that if Damelia became queen she would lead Furyondy and the world to destruction at the hands of the Illithid. The princess knew nothing of this threat. The two took Damelia to the Ethereal Plane where they were going to kill her. Tyris Flare and the princess battled hard. They also discussed why they took Damelia as they fought. The princess, explained that if they could prove to her what they said was the truth, then for the sake of the people she would relinquish the throne. Damelia strongly believes that the “good of the many outweigh the good of the one.” Not believing a paladin would be able to do what was necessary, or that Damelia would truly give up the throne, they deposited her on a planet. It was not their intentions for her to die there, just be stranded and thwart the plans of the Illithid. However it was a very deadly dune planet whose environment could kill her (radiation). Damelia prayed to Athena for divine intervention. Shortly afterwards her prayers were answered, she was mysteriously rescued.

To determine if what she was told was true, Damelia bravely met with Adam. After Adam explained his conviction and vision, she believed his sincerity (even if she didn’t necessarily believe that the future they saw was what would happen), Damelia did what she knew she had to do. She abdicated her rights to the throne in favor of her 12-year-old nephew, Nathan. After her brother was defeated, Damelia remained as Regent until her nephew became of age. In this capacity she proved that she could do what was necessary as long as it did not go against her ethics. She agreed to Adam’s demand that “witches” (commonly burned at the stake in Furyondy) be tested for psionic talent (Damelia knew that their were many good witches who did not deserve death). Those with this talent would be trained to help in the war against the Illithid, which were currently controlling many key rulers throughout the world.

After Damelia became Regent, all hell broke loose. The Illithid (known commonly as Mind-Flayers), out of fear, used their influence upon the controlled rulers to attack Furyondy and plunge the poor country back into chaos. The former coalition of the rebellion were joined by many renowned hero’s including: Nanarch of Oakmont (most powerful telepath on Oerth), Moorak Drake, Marti Silverwind, Harbinder Prandoori, Kurt, Guile, Shang-lung Drake, Photon, Jerily, Gamoth, and Treblo SkyMage to name just a few. These powerful heroes led small forces against massive military assaults. In one particular battle after their troops were slaughtered, Damelia, Clive, Caeleia, Margus, Amajaro, Taarna, Bart, Rhom and Anastasia repulsed and slew more than 1,000 invading goblins and hobgoblins at the fields south of Grabford. In honor of the nine survivors and their victory, the region was renamed the Valley of Nine. Eventually (after great bloodshed) the Mind flayer threat was eliminated due to the excellent plan Moorak Drake came up with. Now, aside from small band of roaming Mind flayers, Oerth is currently free of their threat.

So Damelia achieved her goal of seeing her country free of Cedric the Evil. She ruled as Nathan’s Regent for 6 years, proving to the people of Furyondy that she is faithful to them. Afterwards, she removed herself from the political boiling pot of Chendal (the capital) and began to rebuilt her fiefs. She currently has the hex Silverdale, which is adjacent to Amberwood, Moorak Drake’s Fief, as well as two other hex and two half hex’s. She has pour massive funds into her lands to rebuild them. While not enjoying the same success as Moorak, because she cannot abide druids in her lands for over long, her lands are beginning to be restored. After all the turmoil, Damelia “retired” for a few years to help her lands prosper.

Damelia came out of “retirement” to battle the forces of evil yet again. Small groups of hand picked heroes were called upon by Mirquin (a good priestess of Corellon who happens to be a drow) to reek havoc in the domain of Lolth, the Spider Goddess of the Drow. Just a few days before Damelia, as well as Sage the Witch, Wooden Thighs (a were tiger), Suevellia Finelock, Sean the Thief, Kalavor Talgris (a were bear), Jessica Talgris, Gamoth and Ashtabular, Amajaro (a panther crat), and Mirquin herself), the Spider Goddess (who also happens to be a demoness) was banished from the Prime Material Plane. There was a limited amount of time to destroy Lloth’s base of power in Oerth and hit her hard in her domain within the Abyss. These great hero’s swept through the Abyss, destroying anything and everything they could, before returning to Oerth. At the same time a second party was destroying Lolth’s temple and priestess in the capital city of the drow. While the party destroying the temple was extremely successful, Damelia’s party would have preferred to do more damage in the Demonweb. Damelia sees a need to return to continue the destruction.

However, upon her return Damelia found that “dinosaurs” were invading her lands. So now continues her adventures…

Magical Items:

Royal Ring of Furyondy/Opal Ring Wearers/Sea Hag's Ring – A Platinum ring that has two opal hearts one encased in fire and one incased in ice (supposedly representing the struggle between good and evil). This ring used to be three different rings (1) the Royal Ring: Platinum with the two hearts incased in fire and ice. Can only be worn by a member of the Royal Family of Furyondy. (2) an opal (not of extreme value, except to the chosen few known as the Opal Ring Wearers), and (3) the sea hag rings of water breathing/free action: plain gold band. Now it is a combination of each, retaining the abilities of water-breathing/free action and enchantment that only a member of the Royal Family can wear it.

Lawful Good Battle Axe (from Quest of Fire and Ice) +1, +3. This magical axe gives the wielder 18/00 strength while giving off a golden glow.

Amulet of Empathy – This enchanted amulet allows the wearer to empathically sense the true intentions and drives of thinking creatures within 30’. The medallion reveals lust, jealousy and envy, hate, etc. as well as more obvious emotions such as anger, sadness and joy. It will also reveal those under the influence of a charm person/monster spell (although not suggestion or hypnosis). A common language is not necessary; this magical item will function on almost any thinking creature. Only one creature per round may be scanned and while a person may hate another it would not be apparent unless they are thinking of the target of their hate. As well, the medallion protects the emotions of its wearer to all creatures within 30’. Because few creatures can control their true feelings, this amulet allows the wearer to prove her intentions regarding some action or event in this manner.

+2 Golden Plate Mail

+3 wakazashi of the Planes

+1 Long Sword

+1 Short Sword – From the Battle of the Valley of nine (see description below)

Golden Harp of Charming – gives 25% to charm when played by one with proficient in harp.

Scarab of Protection – 1 bonus to all saving throws vs. spell. If no save is normally possible, he gets a one in 20 chance of saving, adjusted by any other magical protections that normally give bonuses to saving throws. Thus, this device allows a saving throw vs. spell at base 20 against magic missile attacks. It can also absorb up to 12 level-draining attacks. However, upon absorbing 12 such attacks the scarab turns to powder-totally destroyed.
