Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
The Movie

Kristy Swanson as our heroine

The film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was released in 1992, and recieved mixed reviews from the critics. The script was witty, and filled with pop-culture references, but it seemed a bit contrived to most people. The concept: Into every generation a slayer is born, and she kills vampires. The problem: Every previous slayer has been killed by Lothos, and Lothos is alive and well, and haunting the L.A. area, waiting for the new slayer, so he can eat her.

Little does he know, the new slayer has something the others didn't:

"My keen fashion sense!"

The Cast

Kristy Swanson played Buffy. And she was doggone funny at it too. I think her best moment was when she finally confronted Amilyn, after Pike relieved him of his left arm:
Amilyn: We're immortal. We can do anything.
Buffy: Oh, yeah? Clap!

Luke Perry played Pike, an attractive loner who was Buffy's love interest. Also a very funny portrayal, but kinda marred by that hair underneath his bottom lip. (A major ick factor in my book.) At the time, Perry was well known for his role as Dylan McKay in Beverly Hills, 90210 , so it was nice to see him in a different role.

Donald Sutherland (I know this pic of him is old) played Merrick, the Buffster's first Watcher. I noticed, though, that the film never reffered to him a such. He just said that he'd been training girls for a hundred lifetimes. (My guess is they created the term "Watcher" for the series.)

Rutger Hauer played Lothos, the head vamp. Not his best showing, but I think he was playing it campier than the other actors were. The movie was fun to watch with him in it, and I have a hard time picturing anyone else as Lothos, so, call it an upside. :)

And finally, Paul Reubens (seen here as Pee-Wee Herman) played Amilyn, Lothos' sidekick. He cracked me up in this movie, and not having been a Pee-Wee fan, it was really cool to see him as someone else. His best bit was definitely his twenty minute death scene. Gotta love that! :)
