Lightning Strikes Maybe once Maybe twice Oh, and it lights up the night....
Rupert Giles put his car into park. It groaned, heaved forward, then finally coughed and sputtered itself out of motion. Its driver grimaced at the noises before getting out and slamming the car door behind himself.
He looked arolund the cemetary, for the hundredth time reflecting how it looked it different in the daylight -- not that it was particularly sunny out today. Clouds had already begun to fill the sky, and it was increasingly humid. To humid, he thought, for tweed.
Suddenly, two sharp burts of lightning rent the sky. He jumped, and instinctively clutched the bouquet of white roses in his hand tight to his chest. Giles went deeper into the cemetary.
And it all comes down to you You know that it does.... And you see your Gypsy.....
He came to his destination and sighed. Placing the flowers on the grave, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a Tarot card. The Universe, it read in large ornate lettering, the artwork depicting angels or ghosts or...some things...dancing joyously in a circle. He sighed again, this time more heavily, and tucked the card in with the flowers.
Turning to leave, Giles removed his glasses, and took out a handkerchief to clean them, hoping the familiar movements would give him enough strength not to cry. It began to rain, and it seemed to Giles that the Divine was weeping for him -- with him. Steeling himself, he turned back to the grave and said:
“I heard a song on the radio today that made me think of you. So I stopped at the grocer’s and bought some flowers for you....But when I opened the passenger door to put them on the seat, the card slipped out. You said you always carried it with you for luck. I guess you weren’t carrying it when Angelus --”
And her memory’s all that’s left for you now...
“ -- when you died.” Giles was suddenly grateful for the rain; it masked the tears that were streaking down his face as he spoke.
“I know you’d say that I’m here too much...that I owe it to the kids not to dwell so much on this, ah, on you, but...I can’t help it, Jenny! Every day I don’t see you at school, and every day I hear your voice in my head. Every day something reminds me of you and I think --”
Back to the Gypsy that I was To the Gypsy that I was
Giles knelt next to the tombstone and wiped his eyes with the now rain-soaked kerchief.
And if I was a child And the child was in love Enough for me to love To love too much....
“ -- I think if I’d been there, if I’d waited for you, I could have stopped him, or done something for you...or something! I love you, Jenny, and I’m so sorry this happened, so sorry....” Releasing his tight rein on his self-control, he finally let the sobs overtake him.
And she is dancing away from you now...
He was calmer now; after several deep breaths he could speak again. “I suppose you’d be telling me to leave by now. I should go...”
Wiping the last tears from his eyes, Giles turned away from the grave and walked to his car. He got into the Citroen, flicked the radio on, and began to drive, destinationless, and the music crescendoed as the vocalist began her song.
So I’m back to the velvet underground Back to the floor that I loved To a room with sun-laced and paper flowers...
back So what’d’ya think?Tell me!
