The Huguenots fled France due to religious intolerance. The city of La Rochelle, see drawing (68k), was one of the French cities from which the Huguenots came. These refugees went to Holland, and from there to places like America, England see picture of Huguenots landing at Dover in 1685 (61k). A number came to the southern part of Africa, some of these Huguenots are my ancestors.

Even though the number of Huguenot's that came to the Cape number only around two hundred people, (Le Roux and Lombard lists 236 Huguenots but they exclude Naude, Migault and Auchamp, on the other hand Coertzen lists 280) the significance of their influence outweighs their numbers since they comprised a significant part of the small community in the early years at the Cape. J.A. Heese researched and studied the genealogical composition of the Afrikaner looking at the period 1657 - 1867. He concluded, that the Afrikaner nation ancestry was, French 13.2%. GFC de Bruyn used a difirent form of calculation and his results were: French 24.7% refer to J.S. Bergh ed. Herdenkingsjaar 1988, R.T.J. Lombard "Die bydrae van die Franse Hugenote tot Suid-Afrika se bevolkingsamestelling". See commemorative stamps on these Huguenots (51k). The Huguenot's has a rich spiritual history. Their spiritual influence has played a far greater role. The huguenot's wanted to be true to their conscience and the Word of God. Being part of the continuing reformation quest for the truth and the desire to be faithful to ones conscience is part of our heritage. The spirit of the Huguenot's would hopefully continue to be part of my heritage and my descendents. Below are the names of my Huguenot ancestors:
