Although John would have made a great King, the opportunity was never his. He got the last laugh. It was his children and grandchildren who disrupted the line of succession causing the War of the Roses. Henry VII, usurper of the throne from Richard III and Grandfather to Elizabeth I, was himself the (legitimized-b stard) great, great-grandson of John of Gaunt and Katherine.
