And the Question is:

Can a 50 Year Old University Chemistry Professor Have A Sense of Humor??

And The Answer Is:
Probably not. It would probably be more appropriate to ask: can a 50 year old chemistry professor have a sense of anything? Well, I think I do and that is what this page is all about. If you agree, GOOD FOR YOU. If not, you are probably a fifty year old PHYSICS professor! The following is a mere sampling of the work of my agile brain. YOU BE THE JUDGE.
WAXING POETIC
It is said that poetry reflects the true meaning and essence of who and what a person is. If this is true, I am in serious jeopardy of being in a locked ward for the remainder of my life.

How I Got Into the Chemistry Game
That is a very good question. OK, so it wasnt phrased as a question..you get my point. Growing up in the South in the 50's was not very conducive to enticing one to the academic life, unless you consider the Klan as academic. The only possible reason one might have for even going to college would be to get to play for 'Shug' or the 'Bear'.My sister inherited all the athletic ability so that pretty much left me to getting a job in a filling station or going in the army when I grew up.Looking back, however, I can now see that I had developed a scientific curiosity at an early age.Like why did my sister have those bumps on her chest and I didnt? Or, how did they get Howdy Doody inside that box in our living room? I remember as if it were yesterday, the first actual experiment I performed. We would go down to the railroad tracks and pick up unused fusees from the trains, bring them home and tie them to the end of a broomstick. At night, we would walk down the alley and burn cockroaches.I soon mentally began doing calculations on how long it would take to completely ash a full grown 4 inch cockroach and found it was directly proportional to how much wet garbage he had munched on during the day. It was a crude beginning...but it was a beginning.

With the advent of the space race, exciting new vista's were opened up to me. For a whole year, I set my lifes goal to be an astrophysicist. I didnt have a clue what that was, but it sounded good. As a matter of fact...I still don't know what those guys do, but it sounds much more intriguing than being a 'chemist'.
