A step up for women's athletics: What a pleasure it is to see women's soccer during the World Cup receive such glowing praise from male pigs who cry every time a female athletic event is on TV. Soccer truly is a cross-gender sport, as the women may be even more exciting to watch with their style; able to show finesse in fighting off blockers while pounding powerful shots on goal and willing to take a fall or knock an opposing player down for any advantage. Let's hope American continues to latch on to the sport as those of us who grew up playing soccer continue to spread the word.

Conservatives as fascists?: For those who believe liberals are lovey-dovey peaceniks and conservatives are extremists hate-filled fascists, here's someone who agrees: James M. Dunn, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee, a lobby of liberal Washington Baptists. On the subject of school vouchers, here's what he had to say:

Most voucher advocates...have not thought it through or are thinking too anecdotally. Some folks turned a blind eye to Hitler's grand schemes because the trains ran on time.
Why no outcry to Dunn comparing voucher-advocates to Hitler? Because liberals believe that conservatives are mean-spirited and hold evil subhuman beliefs of the world, and don't fault Mr. Dunn for expressing his views in such an insanely unfair characterization.

From the "You still don't get it" department: Queen Elizabeth dined in a public restaurant for the first time in some 50 years. However, no other patrons were allowed in the establishment, security personnel even dived in a lake in the restaurant's garden to make sure no one was lurking, and cleared out a church across the street for security.

You better watch out..: The Los Angeles Times did some digging into GOP presidential frontrunner George W. Bush's military service, and made a front-page story out of this (from CNN's wire):

The Times has done an in-depth look at Gov. Bush's service as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard during the Viet Nam era. The report says Bush received "highly favorable treatment" by the Guard in allowing him to join the pilot corps despite no ROTC or previous flight experience. The Guard also admitted Bush ahead of 150 people on the wait list. And by serving in Guard, Bush was virtually assured he would never be sent to Viet Nam.

STILL, the Times concludes there is NO evidence the Guard received political or other pressure to admit Bush (whose father at the time was a Texas congressman). The report also shows he performed very capably in the Guard once admitted.

Not quite the scandal the Dems want it to be; they conveniently overlook the fact that Clinton was elected despite weaseling out of the draft and not serving AT ALL, then lying about it during the 92 primary season.
You can look forward to a dozen more of these so-called "in depth" pieces over the next year as the liberal press does everything in its power to stop Bush. You can also count on Clinton's cronies aiding the press so his "legacy" is protected by a Gore win. Step 1: make Bush out to be a "child of privilege", i.e. a spoiled brat who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Men have feelings to: In a recently published study, Harvard University researchers show how the bodies of action figures have changed through the years. According to the data, toys like GI Joe and Luke Skywalker have gone from naturalistic body types to bulked-up musclemen.
Dr. Harrison G. Pope, associate professor of psychiatry at the Medical School and author of the study, said he is worried that young boys will aspire to the impossibly muscular bodies of their action figures.
The report reads that the original GI Joe, if scaled to human height, would have a bicep circumference of about 11 1/2 inches--that of an ordinary man. But a GI Joe Extreme from 1997 would have biceps that measure 26 inches, larger than any body builder in history.
"We're not saying that playing with these toys make little boys grow up to be neurotic," he said. But Pope added that the bulked-up toys affect society's view of the ideal male body. "Little kids playing with [the toys] get a very unrealistic idea of the male body image," he said.

Something to make you laugh (from CNN's wire):
BUENOS AIRES, July 2 (AFP) - A man who had taken three Viagra pills had to undergo surgery after suffering a 24-hour erection, local television reported Friday.
A urologist told local television that a blood vessel to the man's penis had become blocked, requiring emergency surgery last month in the capital's Santojanni Hospital.
Anesthesiologist Carlos Alberino said the patient had taken three Viagra pills -- two more than the recommended dosage -- in an effort to increase his sexual potential.
"What has to be made clear is the damage this medicine can cause, such as what happened to this patient. Some think if one pill is good, two or three will be better... but that's not true," he added.
