Hi John,
The leap frog continues! I was recently introduced to your
site by my
brother, Jeff Shillings, and was challenged to try to match his
score. He
had posted an -11 and was rubbing it in pretty hard..:) I
hadn't played
Devil's in quite a long time....had given it up in frustration.
Jeff faxed
me the tips you put together and i decided to accept his challenge,
with your
help! I now REALLY enjoy Devil's and the best thing of all is
that now the
big brother has reestablished his rightful place in the sibling
rivalry!!
:-))).
Thanks for the tips and thanks for the website...cool deal. As
with your
-15, i felt like i left a couple out there but I ain't complaining
either..lol. Keep up the good playing and good work with your
site. I
expect you will try to leap frog me again as i am sure Jeff
will....GL and
take care

Hi John,
Jeff Shillings again. I told my brother about your site (and my
score) so he
promptly took up the Devil's Challenge and recorded a score. He
sent me an
email of his game, so I knew it must be good. I loaded it and
played....and
fell behind early and settled in to watch his round. Early on
the back 9 I
saw I was step for step with him. I continued to play well and
came up with
a good score. He broke the record, but I broke his record! His
and my new
file is attached. The scores are as follows:
Jeff Shillings aka "TexAgs" -
-14
Larry Shillings aka "Birdmor" - -12
LOL...we are have a new appreciation for Devil's, whereas we never
gave it a
second thought before!
Hi John,
I was checking out your site the other day and saw the Hall of Fame.
I
decided to have a try (several tries, really) and came up with a good
one.
The file is attached. The tutorial was excellent! My snap
was bad the whole
game and it finally caught up to me on the 17th with a bogie!! But,
I made
some good saving putts along the way, so I guess the breaks all evened
out.
Good Site!
Jeff "TexAgs" Shillings (scored a -11)

(Old)
I'll tell you a short story about Devils
Island. Shortly after your
original record round, I printed out your pictorial on how to play the
course. Just a few days later, a friend and I joined a team ladder.
In one
of our first matches, we said 'no' when asked about course or condition
preferences. Our opponents asked if we were sure and we said yes.
Maybe you've guessed by now...they took us to Devils Island with hard/fast
greens. I reached for your DI guide and with my teammate on the
phone, we
proceeded to beat those jokers 2 up. Out of many online games,
that's one I
will always remember.
I no longer play the 2 click swing, just powerstroke. On Monday of
this
week, the number one player on the PS ladder took us to Devils for a match
and I reached for the notes again. Sadly, I wasn't able to beat him
this
time, but it sure helped having your guide, even though club selections
will
differ a little with power stroke.
All that to say thanks for sharing your knowledge about how to play the
course. In case you might be interested, I've attached a double
eagle on
the 18th hole. It was done in practice, not a match, but I was
pretty
impressed anyway.
Thanks for submitting your record rounds. Hit 'em straight and long.

To John Pineda,
luv ur site and ur piece on devils isle intrigued me. Played 4 rounds
there today and figured a few things out. 14th hole, par 3, with pin in
middle circle...use a flop 5-wood, aim dead at stick...12-6 snap gives u
a 3.7 foot putt from behind the pin....did it 2 rounds in a row!
Anyway, i shot -4 two rounds in a row (couldn't believe it) with
NW/S/F conditions. recorded second round if ur interested. was 5 under
goin to 18, 3-putted for bogey and just missed a few other putts during
the round or coulda been a lot lower score. Found back nine easier to
score on than front. Maybe it took that long for my putter to
warm-up....anyway had a blast. Wanna try and take a stab at the record.
well, hope u r well and hittin em straight!
Sincerely,
John Werner.

Werner indeed shot a 60 after a few days, tying Lee Harris' record round.
John -
My name is Bob Sorem, and I enjoyed looking at your info on the Devil's
Island course. The course I have is from Links 386 and I am using it
with Links LS 2000 (a damn AWESOME program). It is nice to see
something besides whining about this course. Hey, if you don't want
such a difficult challenge, try Bountiful or something!
I have tried MANY things to get decent scores on this course. I know
that using Links 386 I broke par many times, but I'm not sure if I have
or not with LS 2000 (I will have to check on that). Most of the
times I
have played with LS 2000 I have scored 85-100, depending on how many
times I got caught in the %$#@%%#$ wild grass. Most of
what you offer
in the way of tips I agree with, as I have done a lot of experimenting
with the course. While I agree that #10 is possibly the easiest
hole,
#18 can also be with a good tee shot. I have attached a modified
picture of #18 (I copied your JPEG and added a different line to take).
Following this line, you can tee off with a driver, and especially if
you have any wind behind you (it seems everytime I play on LS 2000, the
wind is from behind and right -- I usually do not monkey with the wind
settings and such), get in position to use a mid to long iron to go for
the green. I have many an eagle on this hole at the end of an
otherwise
miserable round.
Again, it was fun to find someone who finds this course a real challenge
rather than something to just whine about. BTW, I certainly agree
that
#2 is the hardest hole. On Links 386, it seemed that the tee shot
would
not roll as close to the trees if you kept it left, and it was sometimes
possible to hit over the trees to the green. I know I birdied that
hole
on Links 386, but never on LS 2000. LS 2000 plays considerably
differently that Links 386 (and LS 2000 is MUCH more realistic),
especially with putting. Under LS 2000, putts are a lot harder to
judge
the distance and break on.
Okay, I've ranted enough. Keep up the good work. Maybe I'll go
play a
round right now to see what I can do!
- Bob
