Open Letter to the Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown.

Dear Sirs

I read with interest that you are strongly for Britain joining the Euro as soon as it is convenient oblivious of warnings and facts from countries already in the system. Parts of Germany, for instance, are almost bankrupt and put the blame squarely on the Euro. All available evidence seems to point to that as Germany had a really strong economy before it adopted the Euro. Further, as long as 18 months ago, German economists were telling you not to join the Euro as it was as good as a doomed currency as each country that uses it have vastly different monetary needs as far as things like interest rates and subsidies for farmers, etc to properly exist. These different needs will cause ALL countries using the Euro major problems in a relatively short time because the currency can’t be adjusted to suit a single country’s emergency requirements. I know ALL the countries now using the Euro would have refused a single currency if we had said “Make it the UK Pound for  the single European currency.”

If you want to join the Euro, there are a good few things that almost every citizen of this country would like to see. The main things are the abolition or drastic reduction of Excise duty on wines, spirits, or alcohol generally, petrol and cigarettes so they at least cost the same here as on the rest of the continent and thus much nearer their manufacturing cost and adjustment other direct and indirect taxes to the same levels also. As all politicians seem to be money-grabbers, not only for the country but for themselves as well, I doubt the above ideas have entered your heads.

If you need other proof as to how idiotic those that run the EU are, how about a sample of decisions they have made? Straight bananas? Carrot is a fruit? How more stupid can you get?

As, supposedly, sensible and hopefully sane people, please come down from the cloud-cuckoo-land that most politicians seem to inhabit after election and see what the real world and its people actually want.

In my humble opinion, General De Gaulle was doing us a big favour when he said “NON!” to us joining the EU, and Ted Heath was a traitor for finally taking us into it and ruining the trade we had worldwide. It also caused massive price increases as our currency system was changed from £.s.d. to £.p. Due to companies immediately taking the old 1d and making it equal to 1p. prices more than doubled in many instances. By entering further into this misguided organisation I know this country will, to all intents and purposes, cease to exist other than as a puppet to the Brussels Parliament and thus to the rest of Europe. Please keep Britain Great and tell the EU exactly what to do with their Euro, and the ‘United States of Europe’ along with its draft constitution.

                                                            Yours faithfully

A humble pensioner who cares about Britain.
