Car Audio and Security are serious issues for all car owners! Here are some of my tips and links for a successful system:

FYI : 1996-98 4Runner

Front Door speakers are 6 1/2S size (oversized)
Rear Door speakers are 5" size.
They can both accomodate speaker depths of 2 3/8".

My System:

You can make your Factory OEM stereo system really rock by replacing it!

I've installed an Alpine TDA-7554 with S604 CD changer under the driver's seat for hours of continuous play

Here's a great spot to hide a smaller sized amp! You can install one in the rear cargo panel. This way, it's out of sight, and out of thieves view!

My Sony ES 4 Channel amp stays safe and secure here in the cargo box!

It was a very clean installation by my friends at
Mac-Car in Walnut, California!

Speakers in a 1988 4Runner
One of our readers reports:

"From: erresc@ix.netcom.com

I have a suggestion for installing 6x9 rear speakers flush in the '88 4Runner. I didn't do it myself, but did come up with the idea for the car stereo installer to carry out. And that was to remove the two hard plastic pockets on either side of the back seat walls. Just grab 'em and they pull right up and out. And there is your mounting hole! Now it's up to your own neighborhood wooferhead to figure out the gory details for securing the driver. I strongly suggest buying some kind of stuffing to fill in the cavity surrounding the speaker after installation. It helps the bass response somewhat. My speakers are Boston Acoustics 6x9's and they sound great. Plus I replaced the two fronts with the Pioneer 'made to fits'. But I'd love to know where some ingenious installer could put larger speakers somewhere up front to complement my rear Bostons with another pair of B/A's."

When buying a new head unit, think about car security too! Do you want a removable face stereo, or one that is fixed that is encoded. Kenwood has a new model that the face automatically rotates out of place, and is supposed to be security encoded. Eclipse makes a head unit which has no removable face, but then when it is stolen, it requires either a security CD to be inserted(Only you know which one.) or a secret 3 digit code. The thief gets three tries, then the head unit is locked out and can only be reactivated at the Eclipse factory!

Remember that Car security means everything! Pick a reliable well known brand, preferably with a backup battery or siren. A thief can break your window, pop your hood and cut the battery power in second, rendering your expensive alarm useless! I absolutely love the battery powered Smart Siren from Clifford! It Rocks!
