Seven or so years ago I was given a small engine with obviously lots of
bits missing. In the initial enthusiasm, not knowing what it was,
I sent a picture in to "Stationary Engine Magazine" UK which was
published in the identity and assistance section but was never identified.
Termaat & Monahan did come up as a possibility. At the time I did not
have an internet connection to gather info and the engine was half forgotten.
( I have 80 engines + or - , only 10 running).
I was doing some research this past weekend ( Found an image of the governor-
also hit and miss ) on my FM Eclipse No. 2, which I'm busy working on,
when I came across a horizontal GRAY looking identical to the (my) unidentified one!
My Engine:
- 3" Bore.
- 31/2" Stroke
- 15" Flywheels
Gray 4 cycle Direction Book 1913 3rd Edition
The following casting No's agree with
- parts list ie. ~
- 2 -Cylinder Head
- 19 -Flywheel
- 28 -Bell crank lever
- 29 -Main cylinder base casting
Engine serial number is hardly discernable on edge of head.
Is Engine a Gray or Termaat & Monahan ?
As you can see someone has in the past tried to convert it to a compressor
( pipe in spark plug hole.)
Also a sprocket attached to timing gear for a magneto or dynamo.
Engine at some stage lost the valve rocker and bracket
(see crude blacksmith replacement.)
Kerosene mixer attachment must have broken off sometime and has been crudely
soldered back on.
Notice how choked up with rust the hopper is!

Just did a lot of sanding and polishing on head edge.
Looks like Engine No. is: 4 2 2 0 4 1
The last four digits for sure.
The only other definite GRAY that I know about in South Africa is a vertical.
Its 80km away and when next in the area will get details and pics.- I know it still
has its makers plate and it runs. - hope the owner has not repainted it.
