This is the North West quarter of Barsoom.
Keep in mind that if this were placed on a globe, the entire north line (90 degrees) would be a dot! The further north you go on a flat map, the more distorted it becomes. To understand this, look at a flat map of the Earth. Notice Greenland. See how to looks like a triangle?
Now look at a globe of the Earth. See how Greenland now looks like an oval?
That is the distortion caused by a flat map.
The further you go North or South on my maps, the greater the distortion. Feel free to convert them to a globe for a true relationship.
The North West quarter runs from 180 degrees west to 0 degrees, from 90 degrees north to the Equator and encompasses Ptarth, Amhor, the Toonol Marsh, Manator, Horz, Gathol and the Western Throxus Ocean.
This is the Northeastern coastline of the Ptarth continent. It shows a number of the (square) pumping stations along the old coast which melt the polar icecap and pump the water south.
There are two unknown cities shown here, one on the coast, one inland.
This is the West Throxus seabed. You see a couple of the newer cities built in an effort to harvest the rich silt on the ocean floor as it was exposed. The northernmost city may be a pumping station.
This is a more easterly view of the Throxus seabed. In the north is either a city or a pumping station. Perhaps these are both?
In the south is the city or Roxor where you will find the Face of Tur. It is believed that sailors on the dying ocean found this rich area exposed by the drying sea and colonized it, building the Face of Tur as a monument to their faith. It is also believed that those who found the place were fleeing religious persecution by the Cult of Issus and built the Face of Tur in thanks for their new home.
This is the eastern region of the Western Throxus seabed. There is an unknown city shown.
Here is the southeastern area of the Artolian Hills and the Plains of Ptarth. A number of waterways cross this are an you see the city of Talum mentioned in the story *** by *** and Panthan of Mars by Rick Johnson.
Here we see the of Amhor mound which was once an island north of the Toonol Bay. Waterways approach this area and are pumped UP to the plateau where it irrigates the entire area.
We move down into the Throxus Ocean and find a couple unknown cities n the dead seabed.
Here is the region of the Throxeus that reaches to the Kamtol Valley.
Here we see the northern part of the Kamtol Valley. Once a deep ocean trench just off the coast of the island of Gathol, it now is the deepest area on Barsoom and remains wet enough to support a real jungle. The Black Pirates settled this Valley so long ago no one remembers.
Here also is the Dead City of Horz. Once the capital of the Orovar people, now abandoned and the home of White Apes.
This is the area that shows Ptarth herself along with a subject city of Flemster mentioned in A Princess of Jasoom by Jeff Long, though I believe that this is a different city with the same name.
The Phundahl Hills to the south are an extension of the Artolian Hills and extend to the Toonol Marsh.
Her the Phundahl Hills reach the Marsh and provide some protection to Phundahl from Ptarth. The marsh is controlled in the west by Phundahl and the East by Toonol. The isle of Ompt and Morbus are places where the Mastermind of Mars, Ras Thavas would dump his failed experiments.
To the SE you see the Koal Marsh, the lowest and wettest part of the Koal Forest.
The Green Hoard of Huntdoon roams this area between the Koal Forest and the Toonol Marsh.
This shows the eastern coastline which the Iss River follows after leaving the Toonol Marsh. The Iss separates into the Iss proper which becomes lost in the Koal Forest and a side branch, the Koal River which feeds the Koal Marsh which resides in a massive impact crater.
Here we see the Hills of Bantoom where the insect Kaldanes build their hives and store food to prepare for the end of the world. You also see the lower part of the Kamtol Valley and the Forest of Manator where Jetan is an obsession.
And finally, the mountain of Gathol, once an island, now but a hill in a salt marsh ,the final remenant of the great Throxus Ocean. It is said that when invaded, the foppish Gatholians leave their gemstones behind to become some of the greatest warriors on Barsoom. It is also said that the gemstone mines of Gathol remain the richest on Barsoom.
