El Cajon Blvd and 70th Street (or close to it)
When I was in the band J.O.E., we used to play at a pub/bar down the street a little. (pictures to come soon! I think they're here: Athens/9444/music)
Since the drummer and I were both under 21, we had to vacate the premises during
breaks. But no problems, because the 7-Eleven was right there. It was next door to a
donut shop, and there's nothing like replenishing yourself with a donut and Super Big Gulp
after playing music for a couple hours. Unfortunately, after the first coupla times,
the owners of the bar said we couldn't bring open containers into the place, so we
had to finish off our sodas in the parking lot in 15 minutes.
Incidentally, this isn't El Cajon. It's somewhere near SDSU.
Oh yeah, it's a good place to watch the hookers walking around, too.
Poway somewhere
I don't remember exactly, somewhere at the eastern end of Poway Road. My mom
was driving me home from a day's fishing at Poway Lake one day (this was when I was 14 or something), and needless to
say it was really hot. I got an iced tea (can you imagine?), just regular, I don't think
I even put Sweet'n'Low in it. It's noteworthy just because I was so thirsty that
I finished the damn thing before I got to the freeway, which is on the west end of
Poway Road. I guess nowadays, it wouldn't be too noteworthy, but this was a while
ago back when SBGs were more occasional with me. Now, I could probably finish
two Double Gulps (given the same heat and thirstiness) in the same distance.
It felt really special at the time, like one of those life moments or something.
Oceanside Blvd., west of I-5
Wow! That's all I can say about this 7-Eleven.. I'll set it up for you.
Linda and I went down to Grandfather's house in Oceanside for my dad's 50th
birthday party. We had just bought our new Saturn, so I was going to take Tommy to
a local 7-Eleven, just so he could see how the car feels and stuff. We asked
Margaret (our grandfather's new bride) where we could find a 7-Eleven around,
and she said 'Go out the way you came, and go up the hill,' and we did. The
7-Eleven itself wasn't special or anything, but the people there were. The clerk
who served us was just a normal mid-east type guy, but the guy at the other
register was really special! I looked over, and saw this widely grinning man, as if he
were in on the joke (maybe he's seen the web page, eh?), who was wearing a green
turban. It perfectly matched his 7-Eleven uniform! It was beautiful. And when I checked
his name-tag, it told me his name was Kashmir. Wow! I told this to Ryan, and he said
it's probably some guy from Oklahoma trying to further stereotypes.
Anyway, just a couple of days after that, running around in my (now former) town of Costa Mesa,
I saw managerial or executive type talking to a clerk at the 7-Eleven. He had a blue
turban on. So now that has me wondering if there's some sort of ranking system going on
with the different colored turbans, like black belts in karate. I just thought it was kinda cool.
An AM/PM in Monterey
Again, I have no idea where it was, just that I went there a couple times. It was unseasonably
hot for our trip up the coast on Highway 1, so convenience stores came in handy now and then.
I just remember this AM/PM to be kinda goofy. Maybe it was because the diet coke tasted
like a combo of root beer and Dr. Pepper, which happens a little more often than you might
think.
AMPM on Orangethorpe Ave. and Walker St. (La Palma)
Technically, I guess this is in Orange County, but it's just a block or so from the LA/Orange border, and it's right near Linda's parents' house. We got gas here because it's about a dime cheaper (or more) than other places we have access to. I went inside to get change from our fill-up and checked out the
drink machine.. They've got two rows of beverages, and each one is as big or bigger than you'd find in a regular store. They've
got almost everything! Even Wild Cherry Pepsi. Quite an amazing array of beverage choices, I must say. It sure gets crowded there. You'd think there wasn't anywhere else to buy gas in the world (the Mobil station (I think it's Mobil, but I could be wrong) across the street is even more crowded). But hey, if you want a good selection of drinks, here's the place to go.
7-Food in Artesia on South Street
There's this little store, it's across the street and down the block from Pep Boys, and
it's called 7-Food. The logo looks just like a 7-Eleven logo, and they have a similar
color scheme, but instead of green, orange, and red, there's purple and some other colors.
You'd think they would've been shut down by the 7-Eleven people by now, since there
are probably some copywright issues there, but I guess they haven't seen it yet.
Inside, it's just a convenience store, but in a mom&pop type of way. Their largest
drink is 44oz, but they have a fairly good selection, including Cherry Coke. The ice
is of that small variety, the kind I usually expect to see in a styrofoam cup at a donut
shop or something. It's certainly adequate, though, and if you lived by there, you
would do okay to go there instead of driving out to a 7-Eleven or something.
