BALL / BERRY / CAIN / ROBERTSON / MITCHELL
My g grandmother , Margaret Caroline Ball was the daughter of Peter Ball and Frances Robertson. Both were born in S.C. and died in Cobb County, Georgia. Peter Ball was b. 1806. His brother , James Ball, b. 1809 in S.C., married Dicey Mitchell in S.C., emigrated to Alabama where their first three children were born, thereafter returning to the Cobb/Fulton county area of Ga. where they are buried in the Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. These brothers were active in the founding of Ebenezer Primitive Baptist at Dunwoody, Fulton, Ga. By contacting the Mary Ball Foundation in Arlinton, Va. MARSHALL / NORRIS / PINSON / WILLIAMS / BAUGH
A history of South Carolina Baptist p.86 Raeburn's Creek Another group which owned its beginning to Daniel Marshall and Thomas Norris was that near Reaburns Creek. A meeting house twenty-four by sixteen feet was erected in 1767 and a church constituted in September, 1771. Aaron Pinson, not yet ordained but expecting soon to receive ordination, preached there in 1772 to a congregation which included about thirty families with fifteen baptized members. No records for the years of the Revolution appear to exist. Aaron Pinson was still in charge in 1790-94, when Benjamin Williams, an itinerant, and John Baugh, a candidate for the ministry, were a part of the ten to fifteen members of his church. In 1794 the church was said to be rapidly disintegrating because of its peculiarities. It probably disappeared in the next few years, its membership being absorbed by such bodies as Bush River, Turkey Creek, Upper Duncan's Creek, and Durbin Creek. February 2, 2001 |

NEWMAN / MARSHALL / MULKEY / GOGGANS / NORRIS / BROWN / MONK / CN
Early Churches of the Back Country p. 85 Bush River Samuel Newman settled on the springs branches of Bush River in 1766, and soon had meetings held in his house by Daniel Marshall. Newman and others were baptized and constituted into a church in June, 1771, by Marshall and Philip Mulkey. Their main meeting house, thirty by twenty-four feet, was built in 1770 on land given by George Goggans, probably from his survey of June 30, 1770, on Beaverdam Branch of Bush River. Another meeting house was built the same year about three miles away. Soon after their constitution in August, 1771, Newman was ordained by Marshall and Mulkey, but died in November of the same year. Thomas Norris, a licentiate of Little Saluda (Mine Creek) Church, came to live among the Bush River congregation as their minister. He was ordained by Marshall and Mulkey in October, 1771, when he took over the pastorate. Norris' "mild, benevolent, and engaging countenance, graceful gestures, and melodious voice...animated and evangelical pulpit communications," excited general admiration. In 1772 two exhorters, Coleman Brown and John Monk, assisted him. Norris' congregation must have been torn asunder by his preaching of nonresistance during the Revolution, and by his death in 1780, but it is claimed they kept up their meetings throughtout the period. One of the members, John Cole, Sr., giving "ardent and warm exhortations," was licensed in 1781 and ordained in 1783 by Joseph Burson and John Webb of Fairforest, at which time he was chosen pastor of Bush River Church. He remained in that office into the new century, and from his pastorate the church became to be known also a! s Cole's Meeting house. During that time, Bush River licensed and presented for ordination Jesse Brooks and William Cole Jesse Brooks left the church shortly after his ordination in 1795, and William Cole died in March, 1802, the same month in which he was presented. Among the officers of the church, Joseph Johnson was ordained deacon in April, 1798, to succeed Robert Leavell, deceased. Michael Landers, as church clerk, kept records from May, 1792, to October, 1804, when his deathled to the choice of Stephen McCraw as clerk. February 2, 2001 |

Craig, DeShields, Bethune
I am descended from Francis G. DeShields, b. abt.1804, in or around Laurens, S.C. She married my 4th gr-grandfather, William H. Craig in about 1827. This couple later moved to Nashville, in Hempstead County, Arkansas. Francis parents were Catherine Bethune, b. 1778, and Thomas DeShields, b. 1776, both French Huguenots, and married in Charleston, SC. in 1796. Does anyone from this region have any ideas for me as to how to trace Thomas DeShields or Catherine Bethune further? Or Frances DeShields, for that matter. I am fairly new to the exact science and pinpointing such specifics in genealogy, but not to the overall process of searching. Thanks in advance for any help! February 16, 2001 |

DUVAL / MAHON / MAYHORN / WOMACK / SILVEY
Drewry/Drury Silvey was left a horse by his grandmother Eleanor Mahon. This was in a land record book as there was a dispute on what was left after death of Joseph & Eleanor Mahon. They had son Bailey and Joseph. Drewry Silvey's son became very influential in Marthasville (later named Atlanta, Ga.). He owned a drygood store that remained in the family from 1850 till the 1920's. Much has been written about him. When he died, the Atlanta Constitution had the entire front page of that issue covering the life of John Silvey. It said that he was related to the Warnocks/Womacks and Duvals on his mother's side of the family. Drewry/Drury Silvey's wife was Margaret "Mary Ann" Womack Silvey. We believe that old Drury born 1780 was orphaned and he and a brother lived with Joseph and Eleanor Mahon so we think that was Drury's mother maiden name but we have not been able to prove anything on this. He and his brother may have been orphans taken in and raised by the Mahon! s. In the equity settlement, it is stated that Drewry or Drury's Grandmother, Eleanor Mayhon left him a horse. What we don't know or what we have been unable to prove is that Drury was actually a true relative of the Mahons. We have only found that one reference in print. A nephew, Drury Hampton Silvey, came to live a short time with Drury's family. The nephew's father had remarried and this younger Drury did not get along with the step-mother. This Drury was born 1814. In the Southern Claims Record made after the Civil War, this Drury's wife states that he was born in Laurens Co., S.C. in 1814. This is also on his tombstone in cemetery in Atlanta. However, we have never found his father or any Silvey in the census records of Laurens Co. or any county in South Carolina. Should anyone have information on this family, I would like to hear from you. Thanks! (Address) 102 Ridgewood Rd., Conroe, TX 77304 1729 March 5, 2001* |

GAMBRELL
We are trying to locate information on my husband's grandfather. His grandparents divorced long before he was born and she remarried a man named Ottis Foster. All we have been able to come up with is that his grandfather was named "Floyd" or "Fate" Gambrell. His grandmother's maiden name was Audrey Althea Blankenship. They had seven children: Carl, Lena Motelle, Ruth Evelyn, Margaret Rebecca, Ruby Nelle, William and Jack. Two of these children have passed away. All we know is that he was a painter and my husband seems to remember visiting him a few times when he was small (he's 56 now) at a store of some kind that he had in Laurens. He also remembers that he died when my husband was young. Any knowledge to fill in our family history for our children would be appreciated. SAXON
My name is and I am a direct descendant of Captain Lewis Saxon who served in the Revolutionary War and was married to Sarah (Sally) Allen Saxon. As they were prominent residents of Laurens County and she lived until 1854, I wanted to know if any sketch, painting, portrait or photograph might exist of either one of them, perhaps in the local library or historical society or in the state archives. I would also like to know if Judy Canant who submitted the information on old cemeteries in Laurens County is a resident of the County. I would like to know where the location of burying ground on the Old Lewis Saxon Place was or is located. From another source, I have discovered that Lewis Saxon was buried in the Old plantation cemetery. This may just be a reference to the same burying ground Ms. Canant referred to. He left a trust for the 2 younger boys, adm. by Daniel Goddard's oldest son, John Evan GODDARD. I have posted several queries for information on MARY POPE but to date can find nothing about her. GRIFFIN
I am trying to find the lineage of my gr-gr-grandfather Benjamin Franklin Griffin. He was born in Laurens circa 1790. He moved to Abbeville County where he married Isabel?? I found their graves at Smith's Chapel in Townville,SC. He died in 1842. I know of two of his children: Jackson, my great grandfather who married Martha "Patsy" Calliham and Elizabeth who married Absalom Calliham. I believe he is a descendant of Richard Griffin and Nancy Clarke, but I can't find his parents to connect him. I strongly beleive that his father was Daniel Griffin and his mother was Milly?. Daniel died circa 1799. His widow married William Burton. Reuben Griffin was appointed the guardian of their three minor children. I have a document that gives me these facts. Can any one help me find a spot for Grandpa? I will be happy to share any information that might help you. (Address) 519 Smithmore Street Anderson SC 29621 864-224- 3790 May 10, 2001 |
