Owens
There were 2 Lafayette Owens born in Laurens Co. in the late 1870s. One was married to Pauline. His first name appears to be Rapley. On FamilySearch.com they list this (Rapley) Lafayette as the son of Gabriel and Lucinda. His sons were John R. and Norbert and his daughters were Cora L. and Olettie. In the 1910 census this R. Lafayette is listed as a farmer in Dials Township. However, I recently made a trip to SC and discovered (Rapley)Lafayette's obituary in your county library and his parents were NOT Gabriel and Lucinda. Does anyone know about the Lafayette that is the son of Gabriel and Lucinda (Cheek)? I know that the rest of his family moved to Greenville Co. before 1900, but by that time he was a grown man. I do not find my Lafayette in any city directory, cemetery, or census list in Greenville or Laurens County. Also, many family members from my Owens family died around 1913. Does anyone know if there was a flu or cholera outbreak about that time? January 2, 2004 |

My Thomas Barnes Williams & Hannah Pinson Williams family moved from LAURENS CO. SC to Carroll Co GA 1831-1832. They lived on the waters of Raburne Creek. We have started DNA testing on our Williams Family to try and connect with other WILLIAMS families from early Laurens Co. You Can find our test results at familytreedan.com. Williams-Group 3. We would like to make contact with other Williams from early Laurnes Co wishing to talk, or take part in the DNA testing. Thanks Dennis W. Branch
In the library book, A New index to abstracts of old 96 and Abbeville District Wills & Bonds, I see the names Betsy Branch and beside it the number 43. I also see the name John Branch and beside it is the number 43. I'm not sure if the numbers indicate pages or books. I would like to see a copy of that abstract (or bond or will). Even if I could not see the abstract, if I could see the year the document was created, it would be helpful. I know I can order through the SC Archives, however, I don't know if these people are truly my family. I believe they are but I would pay $20 to the Archives for nothing if they are not my family. Do you have any way to look up that information? 1630 San Filippo Dr., SE, Palm Bay, FL 32909 January 9, 2004 |

In Union Baptist church cemetery,(old Quaker Rd.), there is A William Y. Jones, and Thomas J. Jones at the back of the cemetery, about midways down. Cotton mills in Clinton SC
Hi my name is Jan Shavers, and I am looking for any information about the cotton mills in Clinton SC. In May or June of 1931 my grandfather was supposely killed in one of the cotton mills. My mon was only six weeks old when this happened. His name was Henry von_Falkner or Falkener. After he died my grandmother moved back to Union SC with her 3 children, and gave them her maiden name of Gaines. And a few years later she remarried to a Toney. He is supposely burried in Clinton but I can not find him on any of the lists in the cemeteries. All through the years while I was growing up no one ever talked about him. And as I got older I was told to never ask my grandmother or my uncle about him I have tried but was brushed off.. I did try to ask my aunt several times but was told what ever you find out I don't want to know. My grandmother (Ethel Gaines Toney) and my aunt have passed away it's like they took it to their graves. My uncle is still living and my Mom but she knows very little . So if you could help me in any way I would be most grateful. If you need any other information please let me know. Thank You Jan S. April 29, 2004 |

BISHOP / SPENCE
I am trying to find the ancestors of William "Archibald" Bishop and Martha Spence. Archibald was born in South Carolina about 1790 and enrolled in the War of 1812 at the Newberry District Courthouse in 1814. He married Martha Spence (her brother was John Holley Spence) and they had two children Samuel David Bishop born July 1, 1816 and William Abraham Bishop born Feb. 14, 1818 in Hopkinsville, KY on the way to Hale County, Alabama where they settled. I received information from a deceased researcher that Archibald was the son of Levi Bishop, but I have been unable to find anything on a Levi Bishop. The family was supposedly living in Laurens County, SC before their emigration to Alabama. This family emigrated with the Hills, McCrays, and Spence families to "Carthage", now Moundville in Hale County, Alabama. PO Box 4215 - Gaithersburg, MD 20885 September 7, 2004 |

John may be a relative of Solomon Goodwin who also was in Laurens County, but moved to GA. John Had a son, Asa, m. Margaret Sawyer. They had had many children. Asa & Margaret had a son, also an Asa, who travelled to Atlanta area from Henry County GA to marry Emily Howard in 1830s. Soloman G. built the Goodwin Homestead in (now) Atlanta and Solomon Jr. m.
