USO and other Volunteer Organizations at Selman Field

Selman Field opened in 1942 during World War II and remained
operational until 1946. More than 15,000 airmen passed through the
Army Air Forces Navigation School at Selman Field, with the base being
the largest navigator training school in the south-eastern United
States during the war. Plus, it also had the distinction of being
the only complete navigation training station in the country during WWII.

The small, farming town of Monroe threw open its doors and hearts
for these young men and women.....it tried hard to help ease the pain of
isolation and loneliness that was felt upon arrival. So have a seat...and
come share a few wonderful memories, tell a story or two and check your
salutes at the door! This is a look at the fun, the music, and some of the
pastimes to be found during the war.
