1.) Click on File and then New and type is Size (I choose 100x100 for examples) and then click OK.
2.) Now use the line tool to divide your image in half so we can use the flood fill tool to fill one half of image.
3.) Choose the Flood Fill Tool and fill half on your image with the color of you choice. (one half should be white!)
4.) Now choose the Line Tool (I used width=5) with current color selected--not the white and use this to create the rounded burnt section. See example below.
5.) Select the Magic Wand Tool and select the white area of your image or the paper in this image.
6.) Now change your Selected Color to Black and select the Airbrush Tool with the following settings:
Size=10
Shape=Round
Opacity=10
Texture=None
7.) Spray around the rounded-out burnt section with the black. You want to build up the black on the very edge so it is pur black. You want to click your mouse in random spots to create a mottled effect and go from black to a light gray. See example below:
8.) Change the Selected Color to the following settings: Hue=20, Sat=240, Lum=60 with same Airbrush settings. You want to click your mouse in random spots like in Step 6. Use examples to get a good idea of what I'm talking about. You want to make the color a little darker toward the middle of the burnt area and lighter the further away from the burnt area. See example below for results.
9.) Repeat Step 7 with the following Color settings: Hue=40, Sat=240, Lum=81 and see example below for results.
NOTE: You can use this on textures such as wood also. In Step 2 you could open up an image of wood (right-click on the wood1.gif below and save as) and use the same image I used and then use the Flood Fill Tool and set Fill Style=Pattern and then click the Options Button and choose the wood1.gif or whatever wood image that you opened. You have to open an image of wood before you use the Flood Fill Tool otherwise the wood image will not be available in the Options Button!

F.Y.I. -- For the Burnt Effects logo at the top of this page I used the Magic Wand Tool to select the black areas of the burnt areas of the logo and then I used the Fire option of Eye Candy 3 to create the flames.
