JYOTSNA (JIE TAO) (ROCK
RECORDS) (APR00)
|
Rock Records' newcomer Jyotsna (or Peng Jing
Hui) has released her debut album.
Background info : Jyotsna is an ancient
language word which means "moonlight", her English
name is actually Yvonne Peng, she was discovered after she
emerged the runner up in the 1998 singing competition organised by MTV
(side-note : Jolin Cai Yi Lin won the first spot in this same
batch while Go Go & Me Me clinched the top prize in the song-writing category).
This twelve-track album is produced
single-handedly by a guy called Zhou Zhi Hao whom I'm not
familiar with.
Song writers include Chen Xiao Juan, Huang
Zhong Yuan, Lin Jian Hua, Pan Xie Qing and Lin Xi. Jyotsna
even contributed two of her own works here (side-note : she
co-wrote a song called "Rainy Day" for Go Go & Me
Me which is included in their debut album "Say
Forever").
The first ballad single cum title track
"Jie Tao" is covered from a Japanese song, with the
Mandarin lyrics written by Yao Ruo Long.

CHEER CHEN (LONELY WITHOUT
YOU) (MAGICSTONE
RECORDS) (APR00)
|
Last year's Golden Melody Awards Best Newcomer
nominee Cheer Chen's (or Chen Qi Zhen) latest album has been
released.
This is essentially her fourth release
although if you go by the full album length criteria,
"Lonely Without You" is considered her second outing
because two of her other releases are actually demo-tape
singles.
As in her first debut album "Let Me
Think", all the songs here are single-handedly written by
Cheer herself. However there are more music varieties here
: besides folk, there's also Bossanova, light rock and techno.
Cheer flew specially to Boston to do part
of the album recording. The album is produced by Will Lin
Wei Zhe (who also produced her debut album "Let Me
Think"), Wang Zhi Ping and a female producer Li Xin Yun.
Cheer also scored a first by being the
first artiste in Taiwan whose songs have inspired a film
director to write a story based on them and to make it into a
short film called "Green Sky". Running about
twelve minutes, it is available for online viewing. If you
have Windows Media Player, you can click
here to watch it.

EVE TAN (LOVE UNDERSTANDING)
(HYPE RECORDS)
(APR00)
|
After the success of her 1998 self-titled
debut album "Eve" which achieved platinum sales just
after four weeks on the Singapore SPVA album chart, Singapore TV
actress Eve Tan (or Evelyn Tan or Chen Yu Yun) has finally come
out with her second solo release which is in AVCD format
(meaning it doubles up as an audio CD as well as a video
CD).
For those uninitiated, Eve Tan is one
of the top ten popular TV actresses of Singapore, no doubt
boosted by her friendly and approachable girl-next-door image.
She is regarded (unofficially) by the media as the number fifth
TV queen of Television Corporation of Singapore (Singapore's
main TV station), after Zoe Tay, Fann Wong, Ann Kok and Phyllis
Quek.
If you consider this release from the audio
CD point of view, it is essentially a singles CD in that it
contains only one brand new track called "My Favourite"
(note : there's also a bonus karaoke version found in the audio
CD). Composed by Ke Gui Ming, it is a light-tempo chirpy
track which I think will draw two extreme reactions from
listeners, namely either they like it very much or they hate it
like nothing else. I belong to
the latter group as I thought it's a rather trivial and childish
tune - quite disappointing considering that it is the sole
new recording found in the CD, what a waste of Eve's sweet and
clean vocals.
The only upside of this release comes from
its VCD visual component which consists of nine karaoke music
videos such as the nice folksy "Understanding" (or Mo
Qi), "Total Commitment" (or Quan Xin Quan Yi)
and "Natural Smile" (or Xiao De Zi Ran).
It also contains the karaoke MTV of the
1999 Singapore National Day's theme song duet (sung with Dreamz
FM) directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark (or Xu Ke) (note :
both the Mandarin and English versions are found
here).
Out of these nine MTVs, two of them are
brand new music videos which were shot especially for this
current release, namely the new track "My Favourite"
and one of her older songs "Drawing Closer To Love"
(or Ai Man Man Kao Jin).

Simplified Chinese.

CRAIG (HELLO) (VIRGIN MUSIC) (MAR00)
|
|
After churning out a string of female releases
in 1999, it seems lyricist Yao Qian's Virgin Music has turned
its attention to the opposite sex in 2000.
Barely a month after releasing the album of
its very first male artiste Stanley Huang, Virgin Music has come
out with another male offering : newcomer Craig (or
Huo Jing Lun), whose looks are said to bear a mix resemblance to
Takeshi Kaneshiro (or Jing Cheng
Wu) and Richie Ren Xian Qi.
Background info : he's an ABC, having born
and grown up in the United States all his life. It was
only until about three years ago that he finally visited Taiwan
for the first time. He dabbles in song writing and his
demo works were reportedly heard by Yao Qian who then
successfully signed him on to Virgin Music.
The first single is the title track ballad
"Hello" composed by Lin Dong Song and written by Adam
Hsu Chang De.
