BABY (LOVE JUST CAN'T COMPARE)
(ROCK RECORDS) (SEP00)
|
爱情不能作比较
好音乐不怕被比较
|
Although this EP was out in September 2000, it
is only introduced here at Asian Music Pop in November 2000
because being strictly a Malaysian release, it is not available
in Singapore. I've been
combing many record stores in Johor Bahru just to grab
hold of the CD. And boy, am I glad I've finally got my
hands on it! This is a
competent album from a Malaysian group that is worthy for release in
Taiwan.
Some background info : Baby is a vocal
group consisting of four Malaysian young guys Ye Jing Xian, A
Fei, Jack and Liu Jia Shao; they released their debut album
"Rejoice For Love" way back in 1998 which contained a
duet song with A Niu and a track whose song title was named
after the Taiwan actress Shu Qi.
"Love Just Can't Compare" marks
their second release in two years. Over half of the songs
in this six-track EP are composed by Baby and they are a mix of
easy-listening slow and light-tempo pop tunes. The first
single cum title track "Love Just Can't Compare" is a
haunting ballad composed by Baby Jack and written by another
uprising Malaysian singer cum song-writer Percy Peng Xue Bin.
So the next time that you are in Malaysia,
do take some time to check out this album in the record
stores.

G FORCE (START FROM ZERO)
(G-POWER MUSIC) (OCT00)
|
最強勁的組合,第一張EP正式誕生...
|
This is a new Taiwan trio group who goes by
the name of G Force (or Qiang Li Zhong Pai). Their
debut release which is an EP is distributed by G-Power
Music, a newly-setup sister company of Rock Records.
Some background info : the three members
are Dennis Au (a LA born ABC who's a popular radio DJ in one of
Taiwan's leading stations Hit FM), Michael Lin (also a LA born
ABC who's a music producer) and David J (who's born in Korea and
has participated internationally in vocal group
performances before) (refer below for their pics); they
first lent their voices to a gospel song called "I Love You
Jesus" in a 1999 Christmas album "Yellow
Christmas" headed by musician Huang Guo Lun.

(From Left : Dennis, Michael
& David)
The EP album is produced by one of the
members Michael Lin and contains a mix of R&B, soul, blues,
gospel and hip-hop. The group has reportedly labelled
their own music as Groove R&B.
There are altogether three vocal songs and
two interlude tracks. The first single is the R&B
ballad called "Love Exists" composed and arranged by
Michael Lin while the lyrics-writers Xiong Yi Liang & Liang
Li Ping are unknown to me.
The EP comes in AVCD format and contains
the music video for "Love Exists".

FEI XIANG (HAVING LOVED YOU)
(FORWARD MUSIC) (OCT00)
|
籌備兩年橫跨三地
台北、紐約、北京音樂之旅創作結晶
|
At last! Tao Zi's idol Fei Xiang (or
Kris) has come out with his brand new album in Taiwan, following
the release of his best-selling compilation album "The
Best Collection Of Fei Xiang" early in March this year.
In this eleven-track album, over half of
the songs are written and produced by China musicians.
Unfortunately, many of these numbers sound a bit out-dated to
me.
The first single and title-track
"Having Loved You" is a soaring ballad composed by Lin
Dong Song, written by Chen Jing Nan and produced by Paula
Ma Yu Fen.
The album comes with a bonus CD single
containing a cover of the English number "She".
This is the same song that he sang to Matilda Tao on the Taiwan
variety show "Super Sunday". One of the show's
hosts, prominent figure Zhang Xiao Yan even made a special
appearance as the female lead in the music video of
"She".
The limited-edition album also contains a
sleek photo booklet that holds valuable shots of the dashing Fei
Xiang, ranging from his childhood days to his family, and to his
music careers in Taiwan, Beijing and New York.

DREAMZ FM (DREAMZ FM 2)
(FORWARD MUSIC) (OCT00)
|
Local trio group Dreamz FM (or Meng Fei Chuan)
second album is out. However their latest work is only
available in Singapore and not in Taiwan yet (note : last heard,
their Taiwan release is tentatively scheduled at early next
year), the reason reportedly being that the record company
recognised that not enough time was devoted into promoting their
debut album in Singapore last year.
Produced locally by musicians such as Kevin
Quah (or Ke Gui Ming), Ken Lim, Shah Tahir and Dreamz FM
themselves, the album contains a whopping sixteen vocal tracks
and features a variety of music styles such as R&B, rock,
ballads and retro.
The first single to be plugged on the
airwaves is the light-tempo "Modern Love" composed and
co-written by one of the members Jim Lin Yi Xin.
The album contains the main ballad
theme-song "Silence" for Television Corporation Of
Singapore's (or TCS) recent TV serial "Angel's Dream"
(or Zhen Xiang) starring Ivy Lee and Terence Cao. There is
also the supporting theme-song "It's OK Even If You
Leave" for another of TCS's TV serial "Wok Of
Life" (or Fu Man Ren Jian) starring Chew Chor Meng and Ann
Kok.
The trio did a cover of the oldie
"Wait For You To Come Back" (or Deng Zhe Ni Hui Lai)
but personally I thought it's a boring choice of material to do
a remake.
One of the most pleasant surprises that I
got out from this album is that it contains a ballad duet song
"Exit" sung with long-time-no-see Elsa Lin Yu Ting who
is Jim Lin Yi Xin's sibling sister.
