One of my 1998 personal newbie favourites
Ching (or Liu Qing) has finally come out with her second
release. This is actually an EP which marks as a prelude
to her forthcoming full-length album scheduled to be released in
December. Hmm ..... are we going to see a continuing
EP-before-LP trend in the Taiwan music biz (witness others like
Phoebe Huang's EP "Love
Has Risen To The Sky" and Umi Hsieh's "In
The Absence Of Love") which is like the
singles-before-LP trend in the Western and Japanese music world?
This EP is slightly different in that it
features seven of Ching's compositions, out of which five were
previously-released works sung by other singers : Karen Mok
performing her very first Mandarin single "What's
Wrong" (or Ze Mo Le), the duet "I Understand" (or
Wo Ming Bai) between Sandy Lam (note : Ching herself has a very
strong Sandy Lam music-intepretation style) and Jonathan Lee,
Winnie Hsin's "Early Morning" (or Qing Chen), Tarcy
Su's "Wish You Happy, Stranger" (or Mo Sheng Ren Kuai
Le) and another duet "Try Hard To Survive" (or Nu Li
Huo Zhe) between Ching and Zhao Chuan.
The remaining two tracks are new recordings
: a demo version of her work "New World" (or Xin Shi
Jie) originally sung by Valen Hsu and a brand new ballad
"But I Hate You" which will also be included in her
upcoming album.

PHOEBE HUANG (LOVE HAS RISEN
TO THE SKY) (ROCK RECORDS) (NOV00)

After three years of absence (reportedly due
to contractual disputes), Phoebe Huang (or Huang Jia Qian) is
set to make a comeback to the music scene.
This EP marks as a prelude to her
forthcoming full-length album which is set to be released in
December.
There are three songs, one of which is a
brand new recording. The title track "Love Has Risen
To The Sky" is a new light-tempo work produced by Big
Brother Jonathan Lee. The other two songs "Love Is
Full" (or Ai Yi Jing Man Man De) and "Love Belongs To
Me" (or Ai Dou Gei Wo) (a duet sung with Alex To) are the
first singles taken from her previous two albums of the same
name.
Frankly, I'm looking forward to Phoebe's
return but at the same time I have a piece of advice for her :
drop the present image that she is spotting now unless she wants
to be known forever as the Taiwan female auntie version of the
fast-food clown mascot McDonalds (side-note : Priscilla Chan or
Chen Hui Xian from Hong Kong has already clinched the honour of
being the Hong Kong female counterpart of McDonalds).

UMI HSIEH (IN THE ABSENCE OF

A male newbie by the name of Umi Hsieh (or Xie
Yu Shu). I first heard his vocals when he sang a 1999
male-duet "Some Women Cannot Be Touched" with fellow
colleague Lin Zhi Xuan. American musician David Foster was
reportedly impressed with his hoarse but husky voice.
This is his debut release in the form of an
EP. The EP is actually a prelude to his forthcoming
full-length album in December.
Altogether there are five songs, including the first
single cum title track "When Love Is Gone" written by
Umi himself. It also contains another of his work
"Wedding" which was originally recorded by Candy Lo in
both Cantonese & Mandarin version, albeit different lyrics.

In their continuing move to stamp music
piracy, EMI Music, Rock Records, Sony Music, Warner Music and
Virgin Music (the latter two replacing Decca Records who
contributed in the first volume) has reunited to come out with
the second edition of "Now Chinese Best" whose name
was inspired by the popular "Now" English collection
series. While EMI Music distributed the first best-selling
volume, it is now Rock Records' turn to release this present
collection.
Many bona-fide chart toppers are included
here, such as those sung by Sandy Lam, Sun Yan Zi, Lee Hom, May
Day, CoCo Lee and Phil Chang. Refer below for the full

If you are one of the many listeners who
like to listen to a rojak compilation, you shouldn't give this
authentic collection a miss.
