DANIEL CHAN (BONNE NUIT EN AURORE) (UNIVERSAL MUSIC) (NOV00)
開啟音樂新開關超越音樂新動力
陳曉東衝向2001最新國語專輯
Daniel Chan has released his second Mandarin album within a year, titled ... er "Bonne Nuit En Aurore".  Wonder whether it's the same explanation as the Chinese title "Goodnight At Dawn".

Dong Dong's new offering can be considered a macho international production.  All the six male producers come from various countries, they are Taiwan's Chen Wei, Bao Xiao Bo, Singapore's Li Si Song, Hong Kong's Eddie Ng and Malaysia's Pin Guan (the ex-member of the duo Wu Yin Liang Pin).  Even the song writers are predominantly guys such as You Hong Ming, Yao Qian, Lin Xi, Yi Jia Yang, Arys Chien and Ji Zhong Ping.

There are a couple of advertisement theme-songs.  The first single "Dream Chaser" is a upbeat dance track which is the theme-song for a drink advert in Taiwan.  The second single "No Way" is another light-tempo number which is a product-theme-song for Taiwan's 7-11 stores.

Other recommended tracks by Universal Music include :

- the title track ballad "Goodnight At Dawn" is the Mandarin counterpart of his earlier Cantonese recording "The Other Half" (or Ling Yi Ban);

- "Is Love All?" is a cover version of Ronan Keating's new song "In This Life"; and

- "In Love With Emotions" is a folkish ballad composed by Pin Guan and written by Lin Xi, which is originally intended for Pin Guan's upcoming new solo release.

WAN FANG (THIS VERY DAY) (ROCK RECORDS) (NOV00)
一年一度萬芳情歌季
讓你想起擁有她的這天
Wan Fang has finally released her long-awaited album "This Very Day".

This time round, she has crossed over to China to make some of her songs, enlisting the help of Faye Wong's producer cum arranger Zhang Ya Dong.  Other producers include Li Zheng Fan, Huang Yun Ling and Jeff Chia (or Jia Min Shu).

The first single "Song In The Wind" is a somewhat dated-sounding ballad.  Thankfully the second single "That Night" is a nice Wan Fang-style ballad composed by Huang Zhong Yuan and written by Yao Qian.  The third single cum title track "This Very Day" is an easy-listening folkish ballad composed by Black Box member Zhang Jia Tian.  There is also a retro-feel Hokkien duet "Well Matched" performed together with Huang Pin Yuan.

Overall this release showcases a more upbeat and cheerful Wan Fang.  Therefore for fans who prefer her previous predominantly sad and lovelorn ballads, this album may need some time to get accustomed to.

FAN WEI QI (FAN FAN'S WORLD) (DECCA RECORDS) (NOV00)
左岸咖啡廣告女主角神秘現身
福茂唱片繼周蕙之後最受期待的美聲新人
Billed as Decca Records' 2000 Newcomer Of The Year (after 1999's Grace Chow), Fan Wei Qi (or Fan Fan - nickname) has released her debut album.

Some background info : she's an American Chinese and a brainy one too (may I add);  currently an Economics student in Harvard, she reportedly put her studies aside temporarily to enter the Taiwan music scene; and she was discovered by Decca Records when she submitted her own demo tape recording of her own work to them.

Produced by Jim Lee, Paula Ma Yu Fen and Li Zheng Fan, the album is packed with radio-friendly pop tunes with a predominantly Western flavour.  Being a newbie, I am rather impressed with Fan Fan's vocal ease in handling both slow and fast songs.

The first single "Think Too Much" is a light-tempo country-folk track composed by Hong Kong Black Box member Zhang Jia Tian.  The second ballad single "Because" is a nice ballad very suitable for late-night listening.  The third single "Can't Reach The Destination" is reportedly a tailor-made ballad song for Fan Fan by Zhang Hong Liang.

Two other note-worthy mentions :  there is a duet song "Don't Cry" sung with long-time-no-hear Zuo An An who composes three songs here including "Don't Cry"; Fan Fan also does a competent cover version "If I Have A Magic Wand " of Sporty Spice Mel C's "Suddenly Monday".

Personally, this CD can already count as one of my favourite albums from a newcomer this year.

HUANG PIN YUAN (SEA WAVES) (ROCK RECORDS) (NOV00)
一個不想被命運打敗的男子漢
捲起海浪的聲音刺穿每一個發燙的身體
These days, Huang Pin Yuan is more popular in Hong Kong than in his homeland Taiwan.  Let's hope he can achieve the same level of success in Taiwan this time round with his brand new release "Sea Waves".

The album is produced by the duo Liu Zhi Hong/Liu Si Ming, rock band group Luan Tan, Wang Zhi Ping and Huang himself.

The first single cum title track "Sea Waves" is a ballad composed by Liu Zhi Hong and written by Liu Si Ming.  The song uses the seemingly-dangerous torrent  waves as an analogy to depict the uncertainty and insecurity that today's people feel towards their love/life goals.

The second single "Are You Asleep" is a mid-tempo composition by Huang Pin Yuan, which sounds a bit dated to me.  A note-worthy mention is that the music video for "Are You Asleep" is directed by his friend Richie Ren (or Ren Xian Qi).

Finally there's a retro-feel Hokkien duet "Well Matched" sung together with Wan Fang.
