SANDY LAM (2001 SANDY) (VIRGIN
MUSIC) (DEC00)
|
2001年最驚豔的專輯
美聲再度活躍樂壇
|
For those local devotees who can't get enough
of Sandy in her November shamelessly-short Music Festival
concert, they can rejoice with her brand new release "2001
Sandy" (side-note : the Chinese title rhymes with her name
when one reads "01 Lian" and also bears similarity to
the pronunciation "2001 Nian").
Just like her previous release "Sandy's",
all the songs here are produced by Jim Lee and arranged by Liu
Zhi Yuan (with the exception of one). The tracks contain a
mix of R&B, ballads, techno dance and slow rock.
The first single "Better Man" is
the Chinese and feminine version of the Robbie Williams hit of
the same name. The second single "Fly Away" is a
radio-friendly mid-tempo work written by Wang Yi Ping.
While I enjoy all the ten vocal tracks
here, there are a few that stand out among them : "Waiting
For You To Say Love Me" is my personal fave track, Sandy's
falsettos and perfect interpretation already made me go weak on
my knees after the first round of listening; Jae Chong's
brilliant music arrangement of his own work "You Can't Have
It Back" is a groovy and catchy techno dance number which
lets many listeners reminisce the old Sandy during her music
days in Hong Kong; the only Cantonese R&B track "Lonely
Shooting Stars" also merits a mention; and
"Reunited" (composed by Chen Guo Hua and written by
Yao Qian) is another breathless R&B ballad that begs
infinite listening.
The album also features four interlude
tracks which capture the sounds of four places that Sandy has
travelled the most for her work and leisure : Canada, Hong Kong,
Taiwan and Japan. However I thought they are quite
redundant as I prefer to listen to her vocal pieces sequentially
without any interruption.
I'm already looking forward to the
Singapore leg of her scheduled 2001 world-wide concert.
Guess I just can't get enough of Sandy.

A MEI (REGARDLESS) (FORWARD MUSIC) (DEC00)
|
歷時一年半10首全主打
阿妹不顧一切獻上好聲
|
Having waited one and a half years for this
release of all-new material, expectations were running high.
Firstly, the album was recorded in three places, namely Taipei,
Singapore and the USA. The three tracks, "One Night
Love", "Wonder
Why" and "No Other Way", that were recorded in the
States, were
written and produced in full by R&B prodigy David
Tao.
"One
Night Love" happens to be the first track
from the album (all ten are to be promoted as singles) to
be plugged on radio and television. A relaxing beat and
comfortable rhythm makes the song an instant hit from David Tao.
A Mei’s singing was pared down to make the song feel soft and
gave me a somewhat ‘come hither’ feeling. The lyrics were
well-written, describing the female side of a romantic and
memorable one night stand. The track sounds like a David Tao
song just that it’s done by a female voice. Why, he even did
the back-up vocals!
Another
memorable track is "Regardless" which was already
recorded three years ago together with her
late mentor, Zhang Yu Sheng. A rather
alternative and metallic track which has A Mei half-screeching
towards the ending. The lyrics are simple yet profound and the
arrangement is fantastic, making up of fusion beats and electric
strings (played by Zhang Yu Sheng, no less!). It took
three years to release as it was recorded just to make the song
come alive. A Mei explains in the accompanying VCD that
in the subsequent three years, she had tried to persuade producers to include the
track in her albums. But her requests were rejected as
they felt the song was too “forward” for the general
listener. However, the song managed to bowl the current
producers over and they even titled the album after it.
All the ten tracks are to be heard at least twice over as different
producers worked on them. Other producers include Huang
Yi, David Huang, Sky Wu and Yuan Wei Ren. Composers
and lyricists include the husband-wife team Phil Chang and
Shi Yi Lang (for their track "Before It’s Too Late", Sky Wu and Yao
Qian (for "Racing") ........ It makes the album one to sample even if
you’re not an A Mei fan as the contributors are of famed
backgrounds.

SANDEE CHAN (PERFECT MOANING)
(MAGIC STONE MUSIC) (DEC00)
|
陳珊妮2000年創作大碟
試著超越一個世紀的統行情歌
|
Song-writer cum producer Sandee Chan has
finally released her long-delayed brand new album "Perfect
Moaning" under a new label. Being her sixth album, all the songs (with
the exception of one) are written and produced by Sandee
herself. Unlike her previous albums which touch on
other real-life issues, her current offering centres mainly on
the popular theme "love". The songs are a mix of
techno, dance, new-age and ballads. The
album title is a combination of the names of her first two
catchy and light-tempo singles, "Perfect" and
"Moaning". She also sang a track "Couple On
The Car" which features the vocals of Hong Kong singer
Anthony Wong (or Huang Yao Ming). Another note-worthy
mention is that she broke her previous album tradition in that
she performed a work written by other people this time round,
"What Are You Troubled About, Love" is the composition
of the late rock singer Xue Yue. A
final note : instead of adopting her own drawings on the album
cover as in the past, Sandee has finally used her own picture on
the cover.
