SAMMI CHENG (LOVE STORY COLLECTION) (WARNER MUSIC) (DEC99)

This is Sammi Cheng's (or Zheng Xiu Wen) first Mandarin compilation release in Taiwan (note : she has also just released a Cantonese compilation album "Thanks Collection" in Hong Kong).

Containing a total of twenty tracks, this two-CD collection features one brand new ballad title track "Love Story" composed by Lin Dong Song and written by Adam Hsu Chang De.  As for the remaining nineteen old songs, they consist of fourteen Mandarin numbers, four Cantonese tracks and one English live cover of Barbra Streisand's "Woman In Love".

The Mandarin songs are selected from Sammi's past three Mandarin albums.  All of her popular hits can be found here such as "Worth It" (or Zhi De), "Waiting For You" (or Chi Chi Wei Ni Deng), "Absence" (or Que Xi) and "Over The Border" (or Chu Jie).

The four Cantonese tracks are her more well-known hits like "Love Song" (or Ai De Wan Ge), "Can't Bear To Leave You" (or She Bu De Ni), "Intimate Relationship" (or Qing Mi Guan Xi) and the duet with Sally Yeh "Love Talk" (or Tan Qing Shuo Ai).

Being her very first Mandarin collection, it's a release that her fans will definitely find worth buying.

ROMI (THOUGHTFULNESS) (UNIVERSAL MUSIC) (DEC99)

Barely half a year since the release of her debut album "Angelfish", Romi (or Li Qi) has come out with her second new offering "Thoughtfulness".

Like "Angelfish", this ten-track new release is also produced by Li Si Song and Xiao Ma Yi.  There are four songs here which are written by Romi, she even produced one of her own works titled "It's Getting Cold".

The first single and title track "Thoughtfulness" is a ballad composed by Chen Guo Hua and written by Yao Ruo Long.  The second single is a cover of Zheng Hua Juan's hit composition "Heaven" (or Tian Tang) which was originally sung by veteran singer Zheng Yi.

If you have seen the MTVs for her past two hits "Love Afar" (or Ai Tai Yuan) and "Unconcealable" (or Cang Bu Zhu), you may remember that the stories in these music videos are inter-linked and they are filmed in Japan.  This time round, Romi has once again flown specially to Japan to shoot the music videos for her two new singles and the storyline will also be related to the previous MTVs, which means that the same Japanese male protagonist actor in the last two music videos will reappear in the new MTVs.

THE FLOWERS (AFTER SCHOOL) (MAGIC STONE) (DEC99)

A recap on the background of this teenage trio group from China : they are an all-male rock band; their average age is under eighteen years old; they write and play their own songs and their music influence includes Green Day and Nirvana; their compositions are so hot that Taiwan singers like Karen Mok & Faith Yang Nai Wen have pounced to cover their works; their debut release in China is titled "Happiness's Side"; and they have been hailed as the youngest under-aged band ever to exist in the China rock music industry.

Their self-titled EP "The Flowers" was just released last month November and marked their debut entry into the Taiwan music scene.  This current offering "After School" is their full-length album which can be considered as the real and official entry into the Taiwan & the rest of Asia's music market.

Containing a total of twelve songs all of which are written by the lead singer and the youngest of them all, Da Zhang Wei (he's only sixteen this year), the music range includes grunge, rock, punk-pop and folk.

The album also contains the two EP songs, namely "Extinguish" and "Silent End", both of which have been covered by Karen Mok and Faith Yang respectively.

JERRY CHANG (JERRY CHANG) (HYPE RECORDS) (DEC99)

Jerry Chang (or Chang Lu Feng) has released his debut album.  For those uninitiated, he's one of the uprising TV male stars in Television Corporation of Singapore (or TCS for short, Singapore's main TV station), he's a Taiwanese who won TCS's biennial Star Search awards a few years back and is the second male artiste after Christopher Lee (who released his "Story" album earlier this year) to be given a chance to come out with a solo LP.

Produced locally in Singapore, the songs are mostly slow and mid-tempo tracks.  However while they make easy-listening, somehow they sound too safe and lack the "oomph" factor to make me really sit up and take note.

The first single Track 1 "Thinking Of Her" is an easy-listening ballad composed by Ke Gui Min who is also one of the two album producers (the other producer is Wu Jia Ming).

Jerry also wrote the lyrics (note : his inspiration reportedly came from his own love experience) for the second single ballad Track 2 "It's You Who Made Me Lonely" which is composed by one of the members of the trio group Dreamz FM, namely Su Zhi Cheng or Cavin (the tallest guy in the group and the one with the longest hair).  There's two versions of "It's You Who Made Me Lonely", one is the acoustic unplugged version while the other one has a full music arrangement complete with synthesisers.  Cavin also composed two other songs here, Track 3 "Actually Nothing Much" and Track 7 "No Memory".

Jerry's vocals are decent and pleasant-listening and they are complemented by his perfect Mandarin pronunciation which isn't strange since he comes from Taiwan.  All in all, a commendable debut effort by him who can be considered as one of the very few TCS male artistes who can actually sing to a certain extent.

JULIAN CHEUNG (TIAN DI NAN ER) (ROCK RECORDS) (DEC99)

A new song cum collection from Julian Cheung (or Zhang Zhi Lin or Chi Lam).

There are five new tracks which include the title track duet "Tian Di Nan Er" with Chung Chan (or Chen Song Ling or Song Song) (note : while this song is considered "new" in Taiwan, Singapore listeners have already heard this number since it's contained in an earlier duet compilation release "Chang Chang 99 - Love Forever").  The remaining four new songs are "Heartless Rain", "Tomorrow", "Scared You Don't Understand" and "Wind & Rain".

As for the six collection numbers, they are all taken from his only solo album "Yes No" with Rock Records released in 1998.  These include "Yes No" (or You Mei You), "People Like Me" (or Xiang Wo De Ren), "Heaven" (or Tian Guo), "I Don't Care" (or Wo Bu Zai Hu), "The Guy Who Doesn't Lie" (or Bu Shuo Huang De Nan Ren) and "Woolen Clothing" (or Mao Yi).
