EDMOND LEUNG (BUTTERFLY HAS COME TO THIS WORLD) (WHAT'S MUSIC) (JAN00)

MUSIC STYLE : MOSTLY BALLADS

OVERRIDING THEME : LOVE

Just like fella Hong Kong friends Eason Chan (or Chen Yu Xun) and Miriam Yeung (or Yang Qian Hua), Edmond Leung (or Liang Han Wen) has also signed on to What's Music to launch his music career in Taiwan.

His debut Mandarin effort "Butterfly Has Come To This World" is produced by, among others, Lin Ming Yang, Xue Zhong Ming and Zhou Bo Xiong (the latter  previously known as singer Xiao Gang).  Altogether there are ten songs contained here.

The first single and title Track 1 "Butterfly Has Been To This World" is a karaoke-friendly ballad which starts and ends off with a short Japanese female-voiced recital.  The song is composed by Pan Xie Qing and written by Adam Hsu Chang De.  The second single is another ballad Track 4 "I'm Not Asking" composed by Yuan Wei Jen, while it makes easy-listening, however it pales in comparison to some of his past brilliant compositions.

A major weakness of the album lies in its uneven mix of music quality.  Some of the songs here sound so out-dated and monotonous that it's quite unbearable to listen to, such as Track 2 "I Can't Forget" and Track 5 "Don't Kiss me".  Furthermore there is an overload of slow ballads here that it's quite easy to get bored and dull after repeated listening.  The saving grace is that some of these soothing tracks are of competent quality, for instance the haunting Track 6 "Lonely Catcher" (composed by local musician Ke Gui Ming and written by Adam Hsu Chang De) and Track 9 "People Who Find Happiness" (composed by uprising song-writer Zhou Jie Lun and written by Li Man Ting).

There is no doubt that Edmond can sing, having proven himself in his past Cantonese releases.  Furthermore while listening to this album, there are numerous times when his vocals remind me of his friend Andy Hui.  Being his maiden Mandarin effort, Edmond's singing diction is passable although there's still room for improvement.  At least he surpasses Ekin Cheng in that while he speaks notorious Mandarin, thankfully this characteristic does not flow over into his singing (unlike Ekin).  However for now, I still prefer his Cantonese works.

RATING : (3 out of 5)

YUAN WEI JEN (YUAN WEI JEN) (WHAT'S MUSIC) (JAN00)
After a four year hiatus, song-writer Yuan Wei Jen (or Yuan Wei Ren) has come out with his brand new solo album which is written and produced by himself.

For those uninitiated, he started writing songs in 1989 and is the guy behind those recent famous tunes like Na Ying's "A Dream" (or Meng Yi Chang) and "Conquer" (or Zheng Fu for which he has also recorded a brilliant demo track which is found in the album "Demo"), Matilda Tao Jing Ying's "Leave Me" (or Li Kai Wo), Sammi Cheng's "Absence" (or Que Xi), Zhao Chuan's "Courage" (or Yong Gan Yi Dian) and Faye Wong's "Passing Clouds" (or Guo Yan Yun Yan).

He has also formed a now-defunct duo group, Fan Ren Er Chong Chang, with another guy called Mo Fan in the early nineties which are responsible for hits like "I Want To Be Your Most Gentle Wind" (or Wo Yuan Shi Ni Zui Wen Rou De Feng) and Du Juan Niao De Huang Hun.

The first single from his twelve-track album is his own composition ballad "Frank" (or Tan Bai) (not that Qiu Hai Zheng's hit of the same name).

TARCY SU (LAZY PEOPLE'S DIARY) (ROCK RECORDS) (DEC99)
Possibly the last prominent singer to release a new album before the start of a new millennium, Tarcy Su has come out with her latest offering "Lazy People's Diary" on 31 Dec 1999.

Produced by among others, Jeff Chia (or Jia Ming Shu), Anthony Wong (or Huang Yao Ming) and Sandee Chan (or Chen Shan Ni), the album offers a rich variety of music like rock, techno dance, retro, swing, folk and bosanova.  Song-writers appearing here include Zhang Zheng Yue, Lin Xi (Hong Kong lyricist) and CY Kong (Hong Kong musician).

The title track "Lazy People's Diary" is a cover of Wu Bai's composition which is originally found in his latest album "White Dove"

It seems that Rock Records is creating its own way of beating music piracy.  Following the steps of Emil Chau and Wu Yin Liang Pin, Tarcy Su's new CD also comes with a larger-than-normal size deluxe version (only 5,000 in stock) which offers lots of goodies : a photo album containing Tarcy's pics (which are shot exclusively by popular MTV director Tony Lin Jin He), a windbreaker, a ticket to her forthcoming concert in Taiwan, CD box, surfing kit (valid in Taiwan only), facial cleaner and shampoo.

RONALD CHENG (LOVE YOU COLLECTION) (UNIVERSAL MUSIC) (DEC99)
Yet another 2-CD collection release.

Amidst the recent press hoo-ha over his breakup with Miriam Yeung (or Yang Qian Hua), Ronald Chang (or Zheng Zhong Ji) has come out with his very first Mandarin compilation album in Taiwan (Note : Ronald has also just released his brand new Cantonese album "One More Time" in Hong Kong).

Containing a total of twenty tracks, it includes three brand new mid-tempo numbers, namely "See Through" (the first single), "Half Of Me" (second single composed by Pan Xie Qing) and "Never Fall In Love Again".  There's also two previously unreleased acoustic versions of Ronald's hits "Won't Say I Love You" (or Jue Kou Bu Ti Ai Ni) and "Don't Love Me" (or Bie Ai Wo).

As for the remaining fifteen collection songs, they include "Ring, Lover" (or Jie Qing Ren), "Enemy" (or Di Ren), "I Really Can " (or Wo Zhen De Ke Yi) and the two duet hits "Caught Between Left & Right" (or Zuo You Wei Nan) (sung with Jacky Cheung) and "Romantic Creation" (or Zhi Zao Lan Man) (performed with Kelly Chan).  Refer below for the complete song listing in Big5 Chinese.

A compilation that represents a bona-fide list of the most memorable hits of Ronald.
