JOLIN (1019) (UNIVERSAL MUSIC) (SEP99)

MUSIC STYLE : MOSTLY LIGHT-TEMPO WESTERN STYLE POP

OVERRIDING THEME : LOVE

Another female newbie from Universal Music this year (note : a few months back, Universal Music introduced Romi or Li Qi to the Taiwan pop music scene).  Jolin (or Cai Yi Lin) was discovered after she emerged the champion in a 1998 singing competition organised by MTV after belting out Whitney Houston's "The Greatest Love Of All".

The album is titled "1019" because the Mandarin pronunciation of the individual numbers 1 and 0 rhymes with Jolin's name Yi Lin (hence 10) and Jolin is presently nineteen years old (hence 19).

This is a release filled with varied but Western-biased musical style which includes R&B, hip-hop, dance and world music.  Having said that, the first single Track 2 "I Know You're Feeling Blue" is however a made-for-karaoke Mandarin-feel ballad composed by Singapore's Jimmy Ye Liang Jun with lyrics written by Hu Ru Hong.  The second single is the English cover of Bette Midler's hit "The Rose" : while it has been given a refreshing musical revamp by adding light-tempo touches of R&B and rap, but somehow I still prefer the Divine diva's heartfelt original version.

There are two other Mandarin covers of Western hits which are incidentally dance tracks and came from two boy-groups : Boyzone's Track 3 "A Different Beat" (Track 3) and 98°'s Track 1 "Because Of You".

The album is produced by Li Si Song and Xiao Ma Yi (side-note : the latter has also produced Romi's debut album).  Kudos to them for having selected the right music path for Jolin for she sounds at ease and natural with western-style pop.  While there's no doubt that the gal can sing, however her diction sounds muffled at times, this is something that she should work and improve on in her future projects.

On the whole, a radio-friendly album that will fit in well with the listening tastes of today's young teenage listeners.

(Side-Note : This is a two CD-album, the first CD contains nine new songs plus one karaoke track of "I Know You're Feeling Blue" while the second CD is basically a single containing the song "The Rose" and its karaoke counterpart.  It's a bit inconvenient in that the listener cannot listen to all the tracks in one CD alone, the record company should have included the sung tracks in one CD while putting the two karaoke music in the second CD.)

RATING : (3 out of 5)
