Comments: the price reduction will probably bring a little bit more sales for the WEBTV units, however it will not be a significant increase without further aggressive advertising. A lot of people have no idea of even what this product is!!! No one is going to buy a product they dont know even with 30-40% price reductions I'm also afraid this is a desperation move by Webtv to get rid as soon as possible of a product that may not be around much longer

Comments: Concerning the price reduction of Webtv boxes, I can't really see any substancial increase in sales occuring until better upgraded software is put into place to keep up with the times. Another factor to look at is the unknowledgable sales staff at the many stores that offer Webtv. Have you ever gone in a store and actually found anyone that knew just what the Hell they were selling and how to use it to it's full potential? I haven't. As for the Bill Gates takeover, I am not much at ease with this. Bill has been buying and closing down competitors for years. I don't want to say that is going to happen in the case of Webtv but I personally don't care for the takeover. There are competitors to the set top biz on the horizon and I for one am keeping a close eye on them because I might need one sooner than I would like. Just my opinion. I could be wrong. I must say that you have an impressive site here. Keep up the good work friend!!!

Comments: We are computer illiterates but love our WebTV..a gift from our grown kids at Christmas. Hope Bill Gates doesn't make it so popular that we have trouble getting on line! Think the price reduction will add sales, but more advertising is necessary...too many people have never heard of it.

I have had him interested for about a month but he felt the price was a bit high for what he wanted until now. His family has a PC and he doesn't like it and is moving out in Jun and wants just web access.Keep up the good work. Regards, Chuck

Comments: 1) I think the price reduction could help sales, but only in conjunction with some agresive advertising. 3) My large number of repeat dial ups is partly due to the fact that I log on a very large number of times per week. I'm retired and have lots of free time. I think the MSWEBTV thing is very positive. I see a bright future especialy if Uncle Bill would get out there and push it like he did Windows 95.

Comments: I am looking forward to big improvements. I purchased my box under the impression that free upgrades were in my future and with that in mind I felt I paid a reasonable price for what I got. I don't expect something for nothing and understand there will be costs for add ons like a printer, Just keep the quality high and the price reasonable,

Comments: As a WebTV buyer at the original retail price, I am obviously disappointed to see the price of the unit go down, however I understand prices are subject to change due to sales and other market forces, and obviously WebTV and Microsoft are in business to make a profit. Hopefully, the price decrease will increase sales so that the product will continue to be produced and continually supported with upgrades, which is very important in keeping current owners happy with the product. As for the Microsoft acquisition of WebTV, I believe it is a positive step for both partners. Of course, it remains to be seen how this will affect current WebTV owners, but I would think the move would only hasten the development of this fine product. Hopefully, the combination of Microsoft's software ingenuity and WebTV's pioneering efforts will result in exciting new products with the consumer as the ultimate winner. But with the bottom line such a dominant issue in today's business world, one can only hope that Microsoft will devote its vast resources into making its newest acquisition a long-term success. I'm sure they didn't spend $425 million to end up with an albatross around their neck, so it would seem the continued development of WebTV would be a high priority at this point. As a consumer and WebTV purchaser, it is exciting to think of what will come out of this high-tech marriage. As technology continues to evolve, I certainly hope Microsoft will have WebTV on the cutting edge. Thank you for a fine product.

Webtv was the answer for me for browsing purposes. If I need/want to do anything extra I'll do it at work. I am one happy satisfied customer.

Comments: I think Microsoft deal could swing either way but should prove to be a positive move. The first major noticeable change will be to do away with the familiar WebTV look for a tweaked Microsoft Internet Explorer interface, (I believe I read this in Infoseek News, but can't remember for sure.)

Comments: #1 - I've read some other comments that Microsoft took this over to control HDTV - What is HDTV? I thought the buyout could be a beneficial thing -- Am I being naive? #3 I originally purchased this machine for Email and chat line communication with my deaf daughter who lives in Montreal. We are very happy with Email, but seem to be very limited as far as chat lines. I understand WebTV will have access to IRC in near future. But in the meantime, I am not able to access DeafZone chat where my daughter spends alot of time. Please hurry!!!

Comments: only time will tell if this deal was made by microsoft to protect their investment(after all, they were there from the beginning),or to squish any development that might interfere with their selling of software to the individual computer users(webtv customers dont need to buy software;it comes from the main webtv server),so more software can be sold to individuals than to one centralized location ) the optimist in me says that hopefully this will finally bring the many upgrades we have been promised (since january 24th ,1997,when i bought my unit nothing has been upgraded, and so far whatever upgrade was promised for the spring has not arrived). the pessimist in me says that WEBTV is on its way to suffer the same fate as the sony betamax and the vynil record...not many left around because of lack of support by the industry or the manufacturer. the port in the front of the webtv unit will probably make a good money-hiding place...

Comments: I've had my Sony WebTV since Dec. I only had infrequent false disconnects up until 2 weeks ago, and then it really started acting up. I'd get 3 disconnects in 15 minutes. So, I called WeCare and was advised that I might have a dust problem. I was told to take off the side panel and blow are into the opening. I did this, plus also blowing air through the top vents. I've only had 1 false disconnect since. So, anyone with this problem might want to try this. It worked for me.

Comments: My comment to Q1 of your survey: What do you think of the Microsoft aquisition of Webtv? My response is Pearlman and the Webtv company are SELL-OUTS! And Webtv should've stayed a small company so that they would care more about it subscribers, not about the money they would receive and to not let Mr. Gates 425 million dollars buy his way around this computer world. I am going to have to keep my fingers crossed and hope this set-top unit doesn't become another piece of junk in my closet next to my Atari 2600.
