Comments: In response to mariorose's detailed experiment
pertaining to the false disconnection problems, I can only say that,
after reading his very detailed account and following his careful
experimentation, I totally agree that the timeouts are the cause of this
phenomenon. Although I have not personally conducted the same
experiments, I nevertheless have spent a great deal of time online,
mostly writing e-mail and followups to newsgroup posts, and have
found that timeouts in my area seem to be closer to the 15 minute
interval (although I cannot say for sure). I am on my third PM box,
which I have only had for 5 days. Previous boxes suffered from
complete powering off and loss of data. I have yet to experience this
powering off problem since the latest box arrived. However, I DO
still experience the timeouts. After reading the detailed account of
marionrose, everything I experienced seemed to fall into place. And
the worst part is that the Network still claims that it is all caused by
factors other than the server's timeout policy. It's like a doctor saying
that there is nothing wrong with you when you KNOw that you are ill
(believe me, I can relate to this). It is deplorable that the engineers in
this case are unwilling to look at a complete list of facts (or
discoveries). It certainly goes against openmindedness and scientific
method to rule out possibilities by simply ignoring these facts (or at
best, possibilities). I really hope that this problem will have a
resolution in the near future, and my thanks go out to marionrose for
his tenacity and thoroughness in tracking down the cause of these
random disconnects. -Phil Sheridan

Comments: I think this is a remarkable product and have already
seen other friends and family purchase it after seeing it in action in my
home. Some of these individuals have never been on the internet.
Some have been on line via their pc's for a long time with such
servers as AOL, Mindspring, Compuserve and some university
providers. They all enjoyed WebTV's ease of use and speedy
connections to their favorite sites. As for the Microsoft buyout, I'm
of the wait and see group. However, I don't particulary look forward
to ever having to wade through any type of Windows application.
The price reduction isn't any different than that found with most other
products; all of which see their various sales and price reductions
over time.

Comments: After having WebTV for four months in Florida,I
disconnected the on line service on the PC and just use it for a spare
e-mail service(JUNO) which is free in Michigan. Plus use some of
the games and installed software. The webTV is much faster and
eaiser to use and I like the big screen and can take it to any room in
our condo. If some other company came out with more features like
scanning photos and word prosseing, ect I might check into it but I
think that WebTV will keep up to any other unit that may come on
the market, they have such a head start and Mircosoft behind them.

Comments: I never really believed that WEBTV is technically
capable of providing java, shockwave, activex or even RA3.0/4.0. If
it can and if it does,at no additional or at minimum aditional
charge;then WEBTV will have to be considered the most innovative
product and the best value in the consumer electronics market since
the invention of the television set. If anybody who isn't familiar with
what the features listed above do to the net-surfing experience gets a
chance to do so;then everybody will demand for WEBTV to provide
them. As far as regular tv watching...as I write this I am looking at 37
6 hour tapes full of tv shows i used to watch on a regular basis, dating
back to Jan 24th 1997(the day i got my WEBTV).Eventually i will
learn to watch tv and surf the web at the same time and hopefully i
will catch up with whatevers going on at Melrose Place,NYPD
Blue,90210,etc..Did Kimberly die already? Finally...NO FEDERAL
OR LOCAL CENSORSHIP OF THE NET!!! We must not let the
authoritarians with authority and power to become our nannies and
babysitters!!! If you are worried your kids going into sites of dubious
taste and content, then don't let them surf while you are away from
home or from the tv or computer screen...With WEBTV it's specially
easy.. Just take the wireless remote and keyboard and lock them in
you car's trunk..take a few minutes to learn about restrictive tools
such as surfwatch or netnanny and use those services to control you
kids' surfing habits..It is up to the parents to voluntarily set up control
of what the kids watch, not up to the autho- riies who will end up
controlling what EVERYBODY watches

Comments: I am a little worried that Microsoft`s interest in
WebTV is in removing a threat to its software business more so than
providing internet service to people who can`t or don`t want the
expense of a computer. If WebTV charged for the upgrades, then I
could see Bill Gates interest. I would not be suprised if this is what
will end up happening. If so, WebTV will probably loose me as a
customer. In regards to the drop in price my primary concern is in
being able to access the internet. I already use the toll number more
than I would like. If too many people are added too quickly will
WebTV become the next AOL with a constant busy signal? I hope
not but of course time will tell.

ever I go to a site they say “Sorry you need Intenet explore 3.0 or
netscape 3.0” We don't even have 3.0 and 4.0 is out already. I want
better audio “3.0”, if I don't get these soon, I will sell the webtv, and
get a PC, I love the net, but I want it the way it is made to veiw, plus
now I know what you can do with a P-C, If I knew this I would
have bought one in the first place. I want IRL, I was told WE did
have it, but I shure as H**l havent seen it!¡! last, I want JAVA

back is the download that we are going to get. I will buy one either
way, but if the download is good enough I will keep webtv and the

Comments: IMO, WebTV should NOT censor or block usenet
access in any way; however, I do think that WebTV should develop
and consistently enforce policies which pertain to WebTV users'
infringements upon the commonly understood rights of individual
usenet groups to establish guidelines for adherence by participants.
WebTV has provided a wealth of info about usenet; WebTV has
published a very specific subscriber agreement. It remains to be seen
how effective WebTV Network will be when it comes to
enforcement of the subscriber agreement. As for any concerns about
the content of specific NGs, WebTV has provided kid-filtering for
minors and it would be an insult to think that WebTV would foist
similar filtering (blocking) off on their adult subscribers. Let WebTV
concentrate on their own house before they go cleaning up the
neighborhood.

Comments: The most important upgrade to me is in the e-mail
capabilities, a printer, and being able to view all the text in a very
long website. I am getting very tired of seeing what p.c. users can do
in e-mail, and feel that Webtv can certainly offer us the same
capabilities, that are really very basic for p.c. users. I do not need a
pc, and feel that Webtv to access the Internet is all I need, but want
just the basic features of the above capabilities. I will most likely
switch to a competitors set-top box if the competitor offers these
things well before Webtv. I will give Webtv about 1 year before I
seriously think of switching, if they don't offer us these type upgrades
withing that period.

Comments: I am delighted with Webtv. My daughter had been after
her mother and me to get a pc, Email, access to the net, etc. for
some time. She has her Masters in Computer Science. We had no
need for a computer and still do not need one. That may change, but
I don't forsee that happening anytime soon. I saw the ads for Webtv
in Dec, contacted our daughter, and she thought it sounded good. In
Jan, I pur- chased our unit and we have been having a wonderful
time (my wife and I) using webtv both together and seperately. We
have been talking with friends in Georgia, Indiana, Belize, and our
daughter via Email. We have purchased items from Washington state
to Singapore. We LOVE Webtv. We are avidly awaiting the
availablility of a printer. I wish Webtv would get one out soon.
Otherwise we are perfectly pleased with Webtv and are not
concerned about the limitations. We realize Webtv is not a pc.

some time. A computer is something that is not on my wish list and
