ENVIRONMENTAL EARTH SCIENCE MIDTERM EXAM ESSAY

About 10 percent of your midterm exam grade will be your grade on the following essay. Answer on the separate lined paper.

SCIENCE AND EARTH MANAGEMENT.  In an effort to manage our planet better, we must first take inventory of what we have, and that includes what we know.  Describe how science helps to manage the planet.  Honors classes: include at least five of the following concepts; Standard classes: include at least three. Use specific examples where appropriate, and the define your terms.

    1.  Why we need to better manage our planet, including the need to choose renewable over nonrenewable natural resources.

    2.  The definition of science and its role in management of natural resources.

    3.  The steps of a scientific method, including how to design an experiment.

    4.  Compare and contrast testing a hypothesis through  experimentation verses fieldwork.

    5.  The need to communicate and verify data and conclusions, including the differences between hypothesis and theory.

    6.  The value of measurements compared to observations, and their relation to inferences.
