Art League meeting

The Art League of Plainville will meet on April 12 in the Municipal Center in room 202.

There will be a business meeting at 7 and at 7:30 p.m. Rashmi Talpade, of Wallingford, will give a demonstration on collage making. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.

Spaghetti fund-raiser

Fish fry

The public is invited to a fish fry at the Redeemer's A.M.E. Zion Church, 110 Whiting St., Plainville on Friday.The Men's Committee will sponsor the event which will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include fish dinners for $7, chicken dinners for $6, and sandwiches for $5.At 7 p.m. the Rev. Wiley Whitaker, pastor of Beulah A.M.E. Zion Church, Forestville, will preach at Redeemer's Good Friday Service.

25th Reunion

Backers Club

The next meeting of the Plainville High School Athletic Backers Club will be held on Monday at 7:15 in the high school cafeteria.

Any member of the community who is interested in supporting all sports programs at Plainville High School is invited to attend.

Drop off opening

The drop off center located at the landfill on Granger Lane will be reopening on Saturday.The drop off center will be open on Saturdays only from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and noon to 3:30 p.m.If you have any questions, call 793-0221 ext. 208 between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Intergenerational trip

The Plainville Recreation Department and the Plainville Senior Center are sponsoring an Intergenerational Trip to New York City, including the United Nations and the Sony Building.The trip is scheduled for April 20 and will depart from Our Lady of Mercy Church parking lot at 7:45 a.m. and will return at 6:30 p.m.

Beanie Baby Bingo

Saint Philip House, a supportive housing program for individuals and families living with HIV and Aids, will hold a Beanie Baby Bingo fund-raiser.The event will take place on April 11 and the doors will open at noon.

30th Reunion

The Plainville High School graduating Class of 1969 will hold a meeting to organize their 30 year class reunion which will be held at The Avon Old Farms Hotel, Avon on Nov. 27.If you are interested in helping organize this reunion, call Michael Aiezza at (860) 677-1998.

Kidz-R-Size

The Recreation Department will host a new program this spring called Kidz-R-Size for Plainville residents.

This program is designed for children ages three and four to participate in 45 minutes of high energy, fast paced, age appropriate structured games.Activities include circle games, parachute games an obstacle course and lots of rhythmic activities to music.

Kidz-R-Size for 3-year-olds will be on Mondays or Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:15 or 10:30 to 11:15.

The 4-year-old program will be held on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:15 or 10:30 to 11:15.

Nature walks

The Tamasso Nature Park's weekly walks will commence on today at 10 a.m. and will be held each Thursday morning, weather permitting.

Those wishing to join the group should walk around the gate marked "entrance" and continue down the lane into the park.The walk starts promptly at the kiosk at 10 a.m.

Many birds, turtles, muskrats and waterfowl are to be seen.Two observation bridges allow visitors to see the man-made parkas well as the natural marsh of the Pequabuck River.

Ruth Hummel leads these walks, which are unpaved but flat trails.The walks are free and everyone is invited, however, advanced notice of groups would be appreciated.

Personal trainers

The YMCA is offering a class called "Get Fit," during which a personal trainer will work with up to four people in a 6-week call twice a week. Class times range from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. For more information, call 793-9631.

Any Plainville resident who is a registered voter and is interested in serving on the Elderly Tax Freeze Committee may pick up an application in the town manager's office, room 300, or at the information office on the main floor of the Municipal Center.If you would like an application mailed to you, telephone the town manager's office at 793-0221.All applications should be returned to the town manager as soon as possible.

Pre-k program

Early Links, an orientation program for prekindergarten students and their families, has registration ongoing in Plainville elementary schools. The program allows parents and children to participate in literacy-based activities and preschool screenings. Participation is open to all families with children who will be five on or before Jan. 1. Dance lessons

Country Western Dance lessons are being offered at the Congregational Church of Plainville, 130 West Main St. from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays.Lessons are taught by Christine Haddock.A donation of $5 per lesson will benefit the Meeting House Fund for on-going church restoration.Beginners are welcome.

Parenting program

A new program, "Parent Power," will be offered to Plainville residents until April 12 at Linden Street School.This parenting program will provide participants with information about child development, practical discipline and communication strategies.Anyone interested in learning more about improving their parenting skills is encouraged to join.

There is a $15 registration fee and scholarships are available.

The program is sponsored by the Plainville Family Resource Network, whose goal is to help children acquire and build upon their academic skills.Registration information is available by calling 793-6304.

Dance classes

The YMCA will be offering dance classes in Ballroom and Swing. Students will learn the waltz, cha cha, fox trot, rumba, meremgue, hustle and swing. The classes will be held Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. (Ballroom) and 8 to 9 p.m. (Swing) until April 26.

YMCA Sports Program

The Wheeler YMCA has announced that its popular pre-school and school-age Sports Program still has openings. Boys and girls ages 4 to 8 learn skills and have fun while playing indoor soccer.

The program is held Mondays for 4 and 5 year olds from 5:15 to 6 p.m. and is held from 4:30 to 5:15 for the 6 to 8 year olds. Contact the YMCA at (860) 793-9631 for more information.

Yoga classes

The Wheeler YMCA is offering yoga classes on Thursdays until April 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. Learn breathing techniques and different poses that will help increase your strength, balance, flexibility and reduce stress. Qi-Gong classes

The Wheeler Regional YMCA will be offering a Beginner Level Qi-Gong Class. Qi-Gong is in the Thai-Chi family and easier to learn and follow. Qi-Gong has been used in China at the Medicineless Hospitals and has helped promote relaxation, stress reduction and aids healing.

The classes will be held Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. until April 22.

Tax information

AARP volunteer tax counselors are available at the Plainville Senior Center. There is no charge for this service, but appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 747-5728.

The appointments will continue through April 13. One hour appointments will begin at 9:15 a.m. Needed to be brought along are your 1998 federal and state income tax returns and 1998 Social Security statements, bank statements, pension slips, wage statements and any stock or mutual fund transactions involving a sale or exchange.

The tax counselors cannot assist anyone who must file rental property schedules or self employment schedules.

Health screenings

The 60-Plus Wellness Screening, formerly called Elderly Health Screening Service, is held monthly at the Plainville Senior Citizens Center. As a preventative health program, it provides an overall health checkup not covered by Medicare. For Plainville residents age 60 and over, a donation of $20 covers the general screening. The screening includes height/weight, pulse and blood pressure, urinalysis, vision and hearing exams, electrocardiogram, oral exam, breast exam for women, six blood tests, glaucoma, stool for blood, rectal exam and pap test for women. Also included are health history, review of client medications, health education and counseling, diabetic counseling and hypertension. The 60-Plus Wellness Screening is by appointment only. Nursery school sign-ups

The Small Smiles Nursery School program is state-licensed and created for children aged 2 to 5. The program will be held at the Wheeler Regional Family YMCA. Registration will continue until classes are full. For more information, call the YMCA at (860) 793-9631.

AARP trips

April 8: "Social Security" a musical comedy at the Fiesta Dinner Theater in New Jersey.

Sept. 29 to Oct. 11: "Cruise Hawaii" on the Norwegian Wind. Spend two days in Honolulu and 10 days aboard ship. Package includes all airport transfers, round trip airfare, all meals aboard ship, taxes, baggage and handling, port charges, gratuities for transfer drivers in Connecticut and Skycaps. Flyers and cancellation insurance are available. $300 deposit per person when you sign up.

Wheeler on the Web

Wheeler Elementary School is now on-line with its own website. The website has school information, current announcements and links to many educational and parenting sites. The website was developed by a Wheeler parent, Daren Casey, in order to allow the school and the parent organization to better communicate with parents and the community. The Wheeler School website can be located at www.wheelerpto.org.

Spring Pancake Breakfast

The Plainville Lions' Club is gearing up for its Annual Spring Pancake Breakfast scheduled for April 18 at Plainville High School.This is a favorite fund-raiser which provides funding and donations for projects such as eye research, diabetes research, low vision programs, college scholarships, Fidelco Guide dog Foundation, Senior Grad Night and several international Lion Club programs.

Tickets may be purchased from Lion Club members.Advance sale tickets are $3.50, senior tickets are $3.50, and children 6 and under are free; tickets at the door are $4.Flower the Clown will be creating balloon animals and swords for the children. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
