In 1993, the general manager of the Singapore Discovery
Center (SDC), Mr Ronnie Choong, went to Kuwait to hunt for exhibits for
the center. During the trip, the T-72 shown on the left was selected for
acquistion from a junk yard which contained a large number of the 1991
Gulf War relics.
The tank was subsequently given to the center as a gesture of goodwill by the Kuwaiti government after approval from the Kuwaiti MoD. The vehicle was then shipped back to Singapore in 1993, and was stored at SAF Sungei Gedong camp ever since. After careful considerations, the tank was however, discarded from the center's display list due to the extent of battle damage sustained. Failing to make it to the SDC, the tank was left to the elements and corrosion rapidly eroded the exposed hull. When it was finally adopted by the Armour Heritage Center in 1998, the turret was all that was left of this ex-Iraqi warrior.
When received by SAF Sungei Gedong camp, the T-72 had a huge gap at the left side of the hull. In addition, two or three of her middle road-wheels on the left side were missing too. It was thought to be caused by a direct hit by an ATGW (i.e. a Hell-fire AT missile launched by a U.S.Army Apache attack helicopter). |
