The chinstrap penguin has a black strap-like line on its chin. It weighs about 10 pounds and
measures at about 27 inches tall. To get to places faster, they toboggan on their stomachs.
Chinstrap penguins are white on the front and throat, but have a black back. Chinstraps are easily
distinguished by the thin black stripe across the bottom of the throat. Chinstraps breed on
sub-Antarctic islands and on the Antarctic peninsula. They breed in large colonies during late
October thru February. Chinstraps build circular nests of stones. Two eggs are usually laid and
are incubated by both parents in shifts of 5 to 10 days. The eggs hatch after 33 to 35 days. The
chicks stay in the nests for the next 20 to 30 days. They go out on their own at 50 to 60 days old.
Their predators are: sheathbills, brown skuas, and leopard seals.
