Fiordland penguins weigh about 6.6 pounds and measure about 21.7 inches tall. They live in
New Zealand, Stewart Island, and South Island. They eat crustaceans and fish.
Fiordland penguins have thin white streaks on their cheeks. They breed on the southwest coast
of South Island, New Zealand, and on Stewart Island from July to November. Their nests are
made under dense undergrowth. Two eggs are laid. The incubation is from 30 to 36 days in which
both parents take shifts from 5 to 12 days. After the chicks are hatched the male stays with them
for 2 to 3 weeks while the female collects food. Then the chicks are left alone while both parents
go out to feed. Chicks leave the nest when they are about 75 days old. Their predators are New
Zealand fur seals and large predatory fish.
