Soviet A-1 Rocket

The Soviet Union boosted the first manned capsule with Yuri Gagarin into orbit on 04/12/1961 using an A-1 rocket. With this feat added to that of Sputnik the United States felt motivated to enter the Space Race which finally lead to the Moon landing.
