The original Van de Graaff Generator was designed an built by Dr. Robert J. Van de Graaff, around the early 1940's. Dr. Van de Graaff was looking for a way of creating a direct current, high voltage power source. His invention made the research into atomic physics as we know it possible, as the "Van de Graaff Generator" (as it has come to be known), was the high energy source for nuclear accelerators (ie: Atom Smashers).
