Generalities: it is a constellation deprived of remarkable stars, but it is important because it includes the celestial south pole in its inner. Unlike the north pole , marked by the Polar Star, the south pole doesn't have any bright stars nearby.
Origins and mythology: it has been introduced in modern times. The name is tied to the form it recalls.
Stars: the Octant contains only a star of magnitude inferior to 4. It is the star nu Octantis, of orange color. The star visible with a naked eye (it is such in bounds), which is nearer to the celestial south pole, is sigma Octantis, of magnitude 5.46.
Other objects: in the Octant objects of particular interest are not found.
