
Generalities: it is a constellation of the southern sky, not very bright. Its transit at midnight takes place between December and January.
Origins and mythology: it is one among the constellations defined in modern times. Initially it was called " Equuleus pictoris " : "the painter's easel."
Stars: the Painter shows only two stars under magnitude 4. The brightest one has magnitude 3.27, it is of white color and is 52 light-years far. Around the star beta (m=3.85) a planetary system in formation has been discovered .
