Luther D. Carr

Luther D. Carr was born on June 20, 1833 in Franklin County Vermont, the son of Isaac and Sarah Carr.

Sometime before 1858 Luther married Mary M. Parker, the daughter of Elkanah Parker. The wedding probably took place in or near Detroit as that is where Mary was born. Luther and Mary spent all their adult life farming in Redford. The young couple eventually had seven children. Three of them, Phineas, Orr and Agnes were born before Luther enlisted. The other four children, Charles, Stanton, Martha, and Adah, were born after Luther returned from the war.

Luther Carr enlisted in company I on August 11, 1862. His company was mustered into service on August 14, 1862. He was 29 years old. Not very much is known about his military service. Presumably he participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg and the infamous Mud March. .

The extreme weather and hardships ruined the health of many soldiers, Luther Carr may have been one of them In a letter dated February 15, 1863, Captain George Gordon said that " We have just succeeded in getting a furlough for L. D. Carr, he goes for fifteen days." The natured of Luther's ailment is not known. Whatever it was, it must have been fairly serious. He never returned to duty with the Regiment. Luther was discharged for disability at Detroit on April 11, 1863 (the State Adjutant General indicates that it was April 20).

Luther died July 27 1916. His wife, Mary, survived him by only a few months. She died on October 8, 1916. They are buried in Mount Hazel Cemetery, Redford Township, Wayne County, Michigan.
