Timo,
IMO, the desertification of Sahara was not a sudden process, but
rather a very gradual one, lasting a millenium or two, or so.
It may have been caused by a combination of natural and human factors.
If it were due mainly to man, then the process would probably begin long
before man had noticed any permanent changes.
The easy living Saharans had probably thrived in a virtual paradise,
grew in numbers, along with their voracious herds, and chopped down what
woods there were, and burned down the tall grasses of the savannas,
whether by design, or by accident. Exposed to the searing sun, water
evaporated, and didn't return.
A similar disaster had happened in Greece almost three thousand years
ago. Plato describes it very vividly, though he was not a direct witness,
due to his complete (how auspicious) insight into its causes.
He also cites palpable evidence of the destroyed forests, in the form
of giant wooden cross-beams in the still complete roof structures,
of ruined temples, which by Plato's time were already resting on the
ground. He describes the washing out by rains of the unprotected soil
from hills - which were once sufficient to sustain a large population.

[Gee, that sounds just like my clear-cutting province of B.C., bent on
rivaling Brazil.] :( <Vote Green, B.C. - your vote will be a joke anyway>

Plato contrasts the Greek tragedy with Atlantis supporting a dense
population with bountiful food, and yet keeping its natural balance
undisturbed. How could something like that be possible?
Displacement of inefficient fields by high-yield gardens and orchards
in a vegetarian society seems to be the only functional model.
Is it purely coincidental that such a model converges with the wisdom
decreed upon man by God in the Old Testament, (Genesis - chapter one)?
Paraphrased briefly, it goes thusly: Get the planet under control,
eat plants, seeds, and fruit of the sundry trees.
To me this sounds like just another hint at a Post-Industrial type of
society, which Atlantis taught by the unerring "Gods" seems to have
enjoyed.. But, you know me and expect me to say things of this kind.
In turn I see these processes still going on, as before. As the
population grows - the Earth shrinks, deserts expand, or start forming
like the Amazonian desert.
In short, Timo, the disasters of Antiquity pale in comparison with the
disasters of tomorrow. All these disasters will be self-inflicted.
We don't have to be psychic to see the trouble brewing. Nations will not
desist from "indispensable" "life-sustaining" meat, and other goodies,
which they cannot imagine that they could live without. So perhaps,
they won't!
Of course, it's somewhat demoralizing to think that it's the two most
developed societies, which incite other poorer countries to sell their
forests to them, build ranches on former jungle-land, and export dead
flesh to the overweight consumers of their affluent societies, and that
these human locusts are the most likely ones to get away with the
consequences and survive.
Yep, I'm speaking of the main three Evil Empires left after the demise
of the Bolshevik USSR - namely USA, Japan, and Red China. Naturally,
we could reel off a long list of countries deserving dishonorable mention,
such as Czechia, Russia, India, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia,
Canada, Somalia, Ethiopia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Madagascar, Turkey,
Iraq, Philippines, etc.
Not one of these countries can make a claim to being a true democracy,
for they all routinely practise matricide of their own Mother (Nature),
and thus prepare for the great extinctions of fauna (including man),
and flora in an all too-near future. As far as this planet is concerned,
most humans might as well be named Adolf and Eva Hitler..
Sorry, your talk of catastrophes set me off. I just had to breathe out
fire and brimstone, probably because I am unhappy over your modus
operandi, which discerns disasters, but fails to identify their true cause -
Homo Sapiens Sapiens - but not enough so.
