The Dragon Fly mod 333-A.C. light two-seat helicopter was created as a result of the commitment and entrepreneurial spirit of two Italian brothers, Angelo and Alfredo Castiglioni. These famous ethnologists and archaeologists wanted a simple and low cost method of transport and observation. Their requirement was for a helicopter that could be easily transported for operations in remote areas and would required only the minimum of maintenance. A helicopter with such characteristics did not exist, but as the Castiglioni's are people who do not give up easily, they decided to develop the particular helicopter they needed and work began in 1985.

HELIOT variant is for military and civil special operations, with a 300kg useful load and is fitted with a camera and color monitor; can carry an external module to permit unmanned remote flying; with module removed, HELIOT can be piloted.

In competitive terms the Dragon Fly can be compared with the American built two-seat Robinson R22 helicopter. This aircraft is similar in size and performance to the Dragon Fly but certainly does not compare regards modular design, light weight, transportability and many other characteristics. An empty R22 weighs approximately 200 kg more than the Dragon Fly (a lot for this class of aircraft) and costs in excess of 40% more to purchase and operate.
