The co-axial pendulum helicopter, designated the Nolan 51-HJ, flies on two counter-rotating rotors of fixed pitch, with no tail rotor, collective-pitch or cyclic controls. Instead, the pilot wields stick, rudder and throttle levers, similar to the controls of a fixed-wing plane. The fuselage hangs like a pendulum from the rotor head. Vertical and horizontal rudders on the tail, along with a tiltable rotor, provide maneuverability. The aircraft can takeoff backwards rotating 360 degrees and can swing much tighter turns than a conventional helicopter. Two Rotax 503 engines supply power. The aircraft can maintain flight -- although hover it can't -- on a single engine. A ballistic parachute provides an extra margin of safety. |
