SIKORSKY   S-56
H-37B  MOJAVE

CH-37B

During its active duty, the MOJAVE was the largest and fastest helicopter in the western world. Its reciprocating engines, mounted in pods on either side of the fuselage, gave it the power to lift 11.000 pounds of cargo or 36 fully armed troops. In battle it could continue to fly with one of its five rotor blades shot away.
Retractable landing gear and clamshell doors in the nose were among its features not usually found in helicopters. The latter feature was useful for its Army role as a cargo and troop transport and its Marine Corps role as an assault transport.
Flown for the first time in December 1953, the H-37 remained in service until May 1960, when it was superceded by the turbine-powered Sikorsky Skycrane.
