Found
in lawns and other disturbed areas, the leaves and stems can be eaten raw
in green salads. Other animals know of their edibility as the common name
comes from being a favortie food of chickens. For human consumption they
are best eaten boiled for 5 minutes. Parts have also been used in traditional
medicine to bring down fever and for other general healing properties.
This common weed has at least a dozen separate species, Including some
in the genus Cerastium. |
